My son was admitted to hospital a few weeks back as he had a sugar and ketones in his urine and when they checked his blood sugar it was over 11, he was admitted and all his other before meal reading were 7.6 and below.

Today he is not feeling for again so I checked his blood sugars and it 8 was before lunch (around 1:15pm). He had a snack around 11:15 at nursery (small amount of fruit and milk)

Is the reading of 8 OK or should I contact his gp?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Can you tell us a bit more? Is your son diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?
His blood sugar reading is not abnormal given he had a snack of carbohydrates (fruit and milk) 2 hours beforehand.
You might expect his blood sugar to be in the range 4-7 4 hours after a snack or meal for example.
There's a guide here that is relevant to your toddler IF he is type 1. If he is not then please don't worry although I am sure you might want to know why he had ketones/high bgs when admitted to hospital.

Hi @Mummabearto3 , and welcome to the forum!

Like Nicole, I'm a bit puzzled. Has your son been diagnosed with diabetes?
If he has, the expected blood sugar range after 4 hours @Nicole mentioned is not relevant, because that is what's usually seen in people without diabetes. If he has diabetes you can expect different numbers.

Can you tell us a bit more on what the hospital told you?

Sorry I forgot to put that he hasn't been diagnosed with diabetes the hospital admitted him because of the random 11.3 reading and he was tested before every meal when on the ward and they were all normal. They said to keep an eye on him and go back if concerned. I only tested his bloods as he said he felt ill with same symptoms as when I took him a&e before.

His snack was quarter of an apple and 1 slice of a banana and small amount of milk

Hi @Mummabearto3 and welcome to the forums. I'm sorry you are having an anxious time with your son.

Look, as a T1 (diagnosed very early at 8 because my T1 mother recognised my symptoms) I've always been paranoid about my children potentially acquiring diabetes. I kept my worries under control by occasionally testing their urine for sugar (spills out into urine if your blood sugar goes over 10) and luckily I never needed to do more.

We aren't doctors here and we can't diagnose, so it's hard to know what to say to you. Meters can have an up to 15% inaccuracy so a reading of 8 can correspond to 7 or 9.... (And if his hands weren't clean you can get some really ridiculous figures).

They said to keep an eye on him and go back if concerned. I only tested his bloods as he said he felt ill with same symptoms as when I took him a&e before.
I'd be more concerned about the symptoms than the blood result, to be honest. Do you have urine testing strips for ketones? (Not desperately accurate and you can get them just for eating a low carb diet, but they might tell you or your GP something?) But in any case, you're concerned and he's only 3, why not contact your GP and see what they think? (Though given this post is a few hours old you'll probably either have already gone or have more data to tell you whether you should go).

Good luck, hopefully he's fine.
