Best way to lose weight?

Messages

I have been T1 for a little over 5 years and in the past have struggled with diabulemia. My weight has fluctuated since having my little boy in November 2011 between 60-65 kg but now, in February I weighed 67kg, and last week at annual check I weighed 71.8kg. It wouldn't bother me too much if it weren't for the fact that I can't do up a single pair of my jeans, so I desperately need to lose the weight.

I am vegetarian so don't eat any meat of fish, and have a pretty healthy diet, except from the picking at chocolate/biscuits when at my parents house. I am fairly inactive, just the regular day to day running around after a 2 year old really, purely because it doesn't matter what I do with reducing insulin etc, I seem to hypo whenever I try to exercise, or have an asthma attack! I'm pretty sure that my weight gain is mainly due to my hypos at work and during the night where I stuff my face without thinking about it, but also I'm pretty sure that I eat too many carbs. I've looked into the LCHF diet and to be honest, it doesn't seem very sustainable it practical on a budget. I am currently on 12u lantus twice a day, and novo rapid at a rate of 1.5 to 10, but on Tuesday I am moving to an insulin pump which is worrying me slightly as I've heard a lot about people gaining weight when going onto a pump? Anybody have any advice?

I have lost nearly 10 kgs since starting on my pump in January. I was very worried about gaining as I'd heard those rumours too. It's rubbish (or at least was for me, thank goodness). I eat low-ish carb (40-90g per day) and keep my calories to 1200-1600 per day and don't exercise a real lot (trying to increase it but am probably really only walking 30 mins 3 times a week). And the weight is coming off slowly but surely. I also still have a wee bit of chocolate everyday (a gals gotta have her chocolate) :) I am 38 and 165cms. Put your mind to it and you will be fine. Once you get the pump nicely calibrated it will help avoid those hypos too. Good luck!

Hi Alexandra. It sounds like you know that the solution is to reduce carbs and reduce hypos. I believe LCHF is the most sustainable way to do this. I understand the concerns about cost. There are threads on here for "low carb on a budget".

The pump is just a tool and it can be used to gain weight or lose weight. In general people on the pump significantly reduce their insulin consumption and their hypos, both of which will help in reducing weight.

I think you'v e already highlighted where you are going Alexander, stop the snacking and get active a little and them jeans will fit you again.

Speak with your diabetes team about adjusting your insulin doses for exercise or Google 'Runsweet' for advice, once you stop snacking and reduce the frequency of hypo's your experiencing you will consume less calories which will lead to weight loss.
