Hi everyone...
After 6 weeks of being diagnosed type 1, I have just realised my gum health seems to be better, or is it just my imagination?
My gums would bleed a little when I brushed, but it's stopped altogether, is this because of low carb/sugar diet I'm on now?
Has anyone else had this?

Not sure tbh, but certainly getting on top of your bg levels will go a long way to improve your oral health.

There is a link between high glucose levels and gum disease, so it sounds as if you are reversing this by gaining control.

Well done ! :D

I've noticed it too - I only go to the dentist now for the occasional repair & clean rather than regular drilling & filling.

Yup. High BG causes gum disease, and then vice versa in a vicious circle. And low blood sugars reverses it so good goof GIOD !! Bernstein writes about that.

I have lost most of my teeth to gum disease, soon after I was diagnosed. I still have a few left and I am keen to keep them, but gum disease can flare up quickly with only a small spike in BG

Thanks Lynn, sorry to hear about that. But even more reason for me to keep an eye on the bg..thank you

One more thing to bear in mind, from experience, is that other medications can exacerbate the effects of high BG, such as hypertension medications. Just saying...

Hi, we once had someone post that their dentist claimed they could estimate how long a person had been diabetic by the condition (deterioration) of their gums.

To here's to close BG control, and the confusion of dentists everywhere! ;)
