Being told “Oh go on, one won’t hurt you!”.
Conversely, the food police.
I notice from my Groupon email today that there is a range of products called Better than Pasta, which claim that "Better Than Noodles, Pasta and Rice are a range of healthy alternatives to regular noodles, pasta and rice. They are made from organic ingredients including flour from the Japanese konnyaku plant. The Better Than range are also fat free, low GI, low in calories, gluten-free and suitable for vegans."

I have never heard of it, and the Search facility on this Forum came up with a blank, so I can't find out whether any Forum members have any opinions about it, before I buy it.

This is what the Better Than .. website ( http://www.betterthanpasta.co.uk/better-than/ ) says about the konnyaku plant:

Japan’s secret konnyaku plant
The Konnyaku plant has been grown and consumed in Japan for many centuries. Konnyaku flour is made from the Konnyaku plant, which is used to make Konnyaku noodles, a Japanese staple food. Konnyaku is high in fibre and absorbs a lot of water. There is hardly any nutrition in Kannyaku noodles, including carbohydrates, sugar, salt and fat. However, it is high in fibre and it is the fibre that helps keep you full.

EDIT: I just found this. Not happy about the oat fibre!!

Ingredients: Water| Konjac flour| Oat fibre| Firming agent (calcium hydroxide)

I am not too happy about the slake lime either! I know it's used in minute quantities in lots of food processing nowadays but as I can manage without these foods anyway, I don't think I'll be trying these alternatives. I have enough additives already.

Useful link for those who really love these foods though. :)

I agree with you Zand, but as you say, for those who are having difficulty giving up their "real" pasta, this may be a good option to help them on their way to VLC.

I tried a different brand name, but made with the same plant. (I think the kind I tried was called Go Slim.) It had a severe laxative effect on me. :( Not saying it would on you, as I have IBS, but just putting it out there. It may even say so on the packaging of the Go Slim, but as I threw out my last two packets, I can't check.

Thanks Rowan! I knew someone would be able to point me in the right direction.

Fallgal, thank you for that interesting tip. Actually I don' t know why I was even contemplating buying it, as I don't like pasta or rice at the best of times!! :yuck: I guess it's because it's now almost forbidden fruit, so I want it!

Cauliflower rice and courgette spaghetti and lasagna will do very nicely, thank you!

LCHF pasta recipes

4 portions
6 egg
200 gram cream cheese – Philadelphia
75 ml psyllium husk
1 ml salt

Heat the oven to 150°C (normal oven slightly lower with fan, my guess 125)
Beat the eggs until they’re voluminous, add the cream cheese and husk and whisk together
Spread the batter/dough evenly and thinly on two baking trays with covered with baking paper, place a baking paper on top of the batter/dough and use a rolling pin or similar to roll out the dough/batter towards the edges of the baking paper to make it thin enough. If you want to be extra careful you might want to spread some oil on the baking paper used on top. Leave the top paper if you want to.
Bake for app 10 minutes
Let it cool and take off the top paper if left during baking

Ready to be cut into your choice, for lasagne cut the piece you want, to make tagliatelle you can also try and roll it before cutting. If you got a pizza slicer this could be an excellent tool for cutting.

Can be stored a couple of days in the fridge and also put away in the freezer for later use.

Dairy free LCHF pasta

2 baking trays
4 egg
100 ml water
50 ml psyllium husk
2 tbsp coconut flour
1 ml salt

Heat the oven to 150°C (normal oven slightly lower with fan)
Mix the dry ingredient in one bowl.
Beat the eggs and water in another bowl
Use an electric hand mixer and slowly mix in eggs into the husk mix
Let the batter swell for 10 minutes

Spread the batter/dough evenly and thinly on two baking trays with oiled baking paper, place an oiled baking paper on top of the batter/dough and use a rolling pin or similar to roll out the dough/batter towards the edges of the baking paper to make it thin enough. If you have a Teflon baking sheet this might work better on the top.

I have tried these when they were featured in Jan on diabetes website. I have been using these since. They are amazing and no spike in sugar too. They look like real pasta. No harm trying one pack if you are in doubt.
I better get my supplies from Groupon.

Modesty2007, thank you for that! I shall be trying that tonight, methinks! Why do I suddenly want pasta? I don't even LIKE pasta!
