BG High After Medicine

I've been prescribed a 7 day course of the steroid pill Prednisolone today .

Since taking the first dose my BG has been consistently about 2 higher than normal. For example, a readng i would expect to be 5.0 is now reading as 7.3.

As this is a short term course of treatment, should I just ignore the increase in BG. Or should I modify my diet to try to bring it back down to normal?

Steroids are well known to increase BG. I would just ride it out as long as it does not get too high, like in the double digits. If you are worried about how high it goes I would talk to the doctor about it.

@Inchindown - Mine were increased when I took Prednisolone for a month, but then it was pointed out to me by the GP it would. I wouldn't be too concerned about it as it may make it increase more should you worry. But, if you are concerned? Go back and see your GP.

My BG got worse today and i saw levels that were around twice what i would normally get. It rose 13.9 when I would normally see something under 7 after food.

So I phoned NHS 24 to see if I should stop taking the steroids. After some consulations I was advised, as It was only a 7 day course of tablets, to keep taking the steroids. They told me the high BG would not be a problem just for a few more days.

As a bonus, the steroids have brought some relief to my arthritic hands, although that was not what they are intended for.

Maybe be a bit more strict with the carbs until you are done the meds. It might help.
