BG level dropping overnight.

I recently started caring for my Dad after my Mum died.
My Dad, who is 78 has Type 2 diabetes which has been controlled for years with Metformin. He takes other medication for a heart condition.
Since my Mum died (Aug 08) he has been eating less though he is taking his medication regularly.
A few weeks ago he started feeling weak in the morning and fell over as soon as he got out of bed, at one point he couldn't get out of bed. His BG then was 2.9.
I've been getting him to test his level when he goes to bed and before he gets up and I can now see a pattern where the BG is dropping overnight, from 7-8 to 4-5.

Is a drop like that normal, if not what could be causing it?

hya ian and welcome,
metformin does not cause hypos, i know some on insulin have a protein snack before bed ,sorry i cant be more helpful but im sure someone will be able to advise you :)
 
What's his diet like? You can get hypos even without medication, I used to do "reactive hypos" which were caused by an insulin over-response to previously going high.

It's possible a reduction in metformin might help, or retiming the doses, but I'd look into his diet first, and if this happens again or more regularly I'd get him back to the doctor.
 
OK thanks for the advice.
His diet has improved slightly over the past 2 weeks, the only problem is getting him to the Docs as he flies into a rage whenever I say "Doctor".
