Hi,

I was hoping someone can help with a few questions?
I am Type 2 - diet and exercise only I have losed a stone and a half.

I have read articles that state blood sugar levels are high in the morning and that eating breakfast helps control blood sugar levels.
If my levels are high in the mornng than surley it makes sense to lower them, but i thought if you eat breakfast ( cearal etc..) this would raise levels?

Should the same amount of carbs be eaten at every meal and should every meal be ate at approx. the same time?
Does diabetes make you feel tired? Today i got up and all day i have felt like i have no energy, although i have not changed my eating routine.

Any answers would ne appreciated
 
Hi Alan, one of the reasons you are tired might be because of too many carbs. Carbs turn to sugar. So regular cereals are a no-no. Try porridge or better still eggs in all their glory. Cut out all the white stuff bread, pasta, rice etc.
 
If you don't eat for some time (typically overnight) then your liver will supply sugar to keep you going. If your natural insulin production is impaired then you can get a high reading at this time.

My nurse told me to eat little and often to prevent the liver rush. Like most diabetics I try to eat food that does not offend my meter so eating and testing can produce a more controlled arrangement than getting a sudden rise in sugar from the liver.

Yes, that's a common paradox. The answer is to eat the right sort of breakfast. I used to get up at say 5am take a reading, which might be 5.8 and then go back to bed. When I got up my BG would be something like 6.4. I'd have porridge for breakfast and 2 hours later I'd be 7.8. If I had eaten say toast and marmelade, well I hate to think what my BGs would have been. Actually, 7.8 isn't all that bad and my feeling, why can't it be more like 5.8 is more psychological.

As I continued to lose weight however, that 7.8 would become 7.3 and now that I exercise for 5 or 6 mins about 1 hour after eating. I usually come in at around 6.4, the same as before breakfast. Exercise releases stuff that helps insulin sensitivity and there's probably some truth in the old saying about walking off a meal.

If I eat a slice of pumpernickel before I go to bed, with a smidgin of butter and a thin slice of cheese, the slow release of unrefined carbs will stop me having this 'dawn phenomenon' and my BG before breakfast will be 5.8 say. If I eat porridge and exercise I can be 5.8 or similar by the time I am ready for lunch too.
 
On diet and exercise only, the lower your carb consumption, the easier it will be. If you want a good nutritious breakfast, try eggs. If you don't have much time in the morning, you can scramble a couple of eggs in a microwave in about 90 seconds
