Hi I just decided for the first time to do a BG test before I go to bed , and I got a low reading 3.8 but I have no symptoms of a Hypo ?
I guess Im not eating enough carbs with my main meal ..

I just had a Biscuit and I'm up to 4.5 15 mins later , I also had a slice of bread to help me through the night ..

When I told the Nurse about my Previous 3.9 BG test she told me to have a slice of bread and Jam , well that was Tuesday haven't been shopping yet so no Jam ...

Now I'm wondering if I never took a Biscuit and bread would my BG Level continue to drop over night ?

I only had one fair size Potato with my main meal tonight , and on average that's all I have been eating Carb wise ,

I guess its going to be trial and error with my carbs , when would be the best time to do a BG test , like I just did before Bed or two hours after my Meal

Oh and where can I get a Data Cable for my Bayer Contour Meter
Thank yet again Dave

Hi Kurv. I'm glad you managed to get out of your hypo. If your level had dropped further you would have had the nasty symptoms of a hypo - it's individual when they set in. Under 4mmol/l is the definition of a hypo. It is important to treat with a small carby snack immediately to stop the levels going down even further then follow with a longer acting carb to stabilise once the levels have started going up. You must never wait to see if the levels will go up or down. They could do either. It is important to test immediately upon waking up, before and 2 hours after your meals and just before going to bed. With the after meal testing this will help you to see if you need to eat more or less carbs in your meals. This again is individual. At this link is some information about hypos:

Thanks Daisy :) ,
Another mini Panic well Just tested this morning upon waking and hit 5.2 .
Thanks for the Link Im printing it up and hanging it on the notice board at work and at home for the people around me ..

So I'm guessing its my main meal more often that is low , I shall start a log on my PC now with readings and food i have eaten ..

No I'm sure I don't fancy having a Hypo at all, I shall phone the nurse as I need more lances if im going to keep a check more often ,

Thanks Dave

Hi again Dave :)
I have just seen that you will be increasing your dose of Byetta. As Cugila said you need to discuss this with your GP/DN especially since you are already getting hypos. Yes you'll need more lances but you will also need a good supply of strips. If you have problems getting them here are some arguments you can use. This is included in the Basic Information now but wasn't yet when I posted it for you when you first joined:

Hi , I discussed my Dosage with my Nurse concerning my lowish BG Levels , she said to me that Byetta shouldn't aid my BG dropping any lower that it is with the extra dosage as it , singles my Pancras to make Insulin when my BG is high and then when its lower it signals not to make any-more..

I have upped my Carb intake for my main meal , but Im still dropping lowish for example to night after my diner (2hr) I had BG reading of 6.4 another hour and 6 mins and My level was 4.2 so I have a slice of Toast ..

So I seem to be keeping my levels ok at one end , but I'm struggling to keep out of the later 3`s and early 4`s in the evening ...

Now I am wondering how much my level drops whilst in bed , for instance if I go to bed with say my 4.2 I got at 21:36 what would be my level at say 2 am ??

So I would assume I need to eat more so when I test after a meal im like more in the 7`s to allow for the drop over time ?

How does this work for some of you ?

and even though I have had a 3.8 and 3.9 my two lowest I have never had any symptoms..

Ah well Im sure I will get to grips with it soon , Got my Eye test Friday and back to the Nurse on Monday

Your Nurse needs to do a bit more homework on Byetta........

It's basic action is after a meal, blood sugar levels will start to rise. BYETTA slows down the rate at which glucose from foods enters the bloodstream. It then signals the pancreas to make the right amount of insulin at the right time to help blood sugar remain closer to normal. It doesn't wait until they are high......it stops them from going too high. Once the Bg levels off it stops signalling the Pancreas to produce any more Insulin.

It also stops your Liver from producing any more glucose when your body doesn't need it, especially after meals.

It also can reduce your appetite and stop you eating too much. It can help with weight loss.

It also slows down the rate at which food and glucose leave the stomach so preventing levels from going too high after food is consumed.

That is how it works........

Thanks , I may have got it a little wrong as that sounds more like what I was told , meanwhile I'm doing good with my slice of toast in the evening ..

Off for my Eye Test Tomorrow , I have a eye phobia so will be interesting

Thanks Dave
