Hi Hooked

Just a thought. I had a similar erratic control issue when I was on Lantus - I switched to Levemir about 3 months ago and my levels have been more stable. There's also a long thread somewhere here about Lantus problems which might be worth a read.

That's interesting, thanks for posting. Up till June this year I've been blaming it on me not really knowing exactly what I'm doing; but since doing the course things haven't really improved at all and I've been pulling my hair out.

I'll look for that thread now, thank you.

Hey,

Your situation sounds similar to mine - I went on DAFNE and came out of it full of hope and expectation to get perfect levels and mine has been all over the shop too ! I've been blaming my hormones as my PMT symptoms are awful and it's really got me down. Fortunately I have a brilliant DSN who has helped me out, so a few things i've done are:

Changed my background from Lantus to Levemir but I have also split my doses so i'm taking some first thing and a second dose around 6pm, as well as slightly increasing my daytime dosage - this has been the main factor for me in getting better control.

A tip for checking for your daytime background level is ok and not rising is to eat no carbs until teatime and check to see how your BG is doing - if it's going up then adjust by 1-2 mmol/l.

Hope there's some useful advice here - I always consider my diabetes to be work in progress as it constantly changes - it's just being mindful to the changes and to manage it so it doesn't get out of control. Now i've got a better handle on it because my daytime background has gone up I can see the other factors that affect my levels and it becomes easier to understand the highs and lows, such as the effect of stress/heat or exercise and I don't feel so out of control.

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I haven't been on since as the eyes are playing up following more laser surgery. (The joys!) I'm just incredibly frustrated as I've just been told it looks like I now need more laser again on the first eye as there is new growths in it - no doubt due to my sugar levels!!

I've been wanting to get on a pump since May, but still no appointment for the consultant to even begin to get that ball rolling.... meanwhile I'm still trying hard, getting nowhere and eyesight is being destroyed.

Sounds like one way or another I need off this Lantus. That's shocking.
I tend to eat very little, if any carb till tea time. I still have to inject a few units at breakfast/lunch regardless. Either correction doses or just to try and keep things even. It varies from day to day how much of an effect these have. Increasing the night injection leaves me with night time hypos - splitting the dose could well be the way forward. Thank you for the info!

Yes, it's always a work in progress. I didn't expect the course to have my levels sorted, done and dusted. But felt like I was better armed to deal with what diabetes throws at me. It really isn't proving to be the case and I don't feel any further forward with it all. The advice they give is wonderful; but in my case it's just not working.

Hi Hooked

Although many inject Lantus just once per day, there are also a few who find that if they inject it evening and morning, their insulin to carb ratios stay more even and the overall control is a bit better. How much to split the Lantus will depend on testing bg levels every 2-3hrs during the day and adjusting the carb ratio to suit. A lot of trial and error and bg testing to get it all ok but it may pay you to have a go.

I'll def discuss it with the diabetic nurse when I go to see her. Thanks.

Well, I have been to the GP and Podiatrist in this last two weeks and both times been reassured that I do NOT have neuropathy, all is well and to stop worrying. "Get those sugars under control." (I'm blummin trying!!!)

So today I was at hospital in Belfast as I was referred there for nerve tests to confirm what was causing my numb/dead arm problems at night. This has been going on for over 15 years now and no help what so ever from GP until recently when he decided to send to get it investigated. It is carpal tunnel in both wrists and the right one will need operated on. The specialist looked rather surprised that in all this time no other help has been offered to me for this problem.

He just happened to ask about my feet (which of course was nothing to do with why I was there) and I told him my issues and that the podiatrist had given me the all clear. He then decided to run the nerve tests on my legs/feet and has confirmed that I DO have neuropathy!!!

In one way I was weirdly kind of glad he did.... I was starting to think I was being over paranoid and other thinking every twinge I get. And how long would this problem have gone on undiagnosed before the GP or podiatrist would have recognised it for what it was?!

And of course he said "Get those sugar levels under control". I'm trying my best, honestly I am. I feel like I'm struggling on my own with my ever changing levels whilst watching it slowly destroy my body and there's nothing in my power I can do about it with little to no support from the medical people who are supposed to be there for me.
