BG testing for beginners

Having treated myself to a meter and a few strips ( I'll harass the med centre on Monday for a prescription) I can find no simple answer as to when is the best time to test if that test is to only be once a day. I feel that once will be enough for me.
A test last night a couple of hours after dinner was 9.3 this morning after 9ish hours was 5.2.
I understand but am confused about this low carb regime as I have been told to go away and continue eating plenty of bread, rice, pasta and potatos.
I really do understand that I have a lot to learn but a starting point would be good

The simple answer was in the information you were given in your Greetings and Introduction post

Buy yourself a carb counter book (you can get these on-line) and you will be able to work out how much carbs you are eating, when you test, the reading two hours after should be roughly the same as the before eating reading, if it is then that meal was fine, if it isn’t then you need to check what you have eaten and think about reducing the portion size of carbs.

Testing once a day will tell you very little. When newly diagnosed frequent testing is advised.
Waking, pre meal, 2 hrs post meal and before bed.
 
Thanks for the prompt response Cugila, the candp indicates testing up to 6 times a day, your addition suggests up to 8 times. Have I misread or misunderstood. Maybe the frequent testing line says it all :o .
 
The advice that Sue and I hand out to newly diagnosed is from our own experience as we know it works. Not sure what the 'candp' is ?? Cardiac and Pulmonary ??

It is your choice as to how many times you test. In the early days you NEED to test and compare the readings with the foods you eat....see which foods are not advisable or which you need to reduce the portion sizes.

This isn't for ever, just maybe for a few weeks till you are more confident and knowledgeable about what your daily Bg levels are and what foods you can eat without a bad effect.
