I have just started with BG testing and am meant to test two hours after meal.....will exactly two hours give optimum results? Results so far has been 'varied' to say the least. :?

hi, the 2 hour timeline is a good time to test as this gives you an idea of how you have dealt with that particular food, the highest peak i believe is at about 45 minutes but its more important to know how you dealt with it rather than how badly it spiked you, this is complicated by the fact that certain foods slow down carbohydrate absortion ie. fat so if say you ate a cheese sandwich your bg would rise slower than eating just the bread, if you are just starting out theres no harm testing several times during the timeline after eating it will teach you exactly what happens, assuming you can afford the test strips :)

just to add, in the early days after dx its unfortunatly common for bgs to be erratic, i know mine where, i would often be higher before eating ie. 8.5 before then 6 2 hours later, its hard to get to grips with, but stick with your control program whatever that is and things will settle down soon and itll all make sense and start to form patterns that will help you

Good advice from Andy there. Another thing to consider ( just to REALLY complicate things ! ) is the GI of certain foods. A low GI food releases the carb content slower over a longer time frame. High GI can give your BG levels a quick "spike" and drop back quicker. It also depends when you take your insulin ( if you take any ). However, the 2 hr time frame is a good marker. Ideally, aim to get your BG levels back to pre-meal readings. Good luck !

thanks guys for your replies. Just on metformin and happily (?) getting test strips on free prescription, so have elected to take quite a few tests over several days to see, if possible, what's good and what's bad - in terms of their effect on me. Back to see my nurse in a couple of weeks with the results so I'm sure she will tell me how I am doing.
