My eating disorder is now affecting my health. I have know for a long time that diets don't work for me. I lose weight well on them but I always regain afterwards and more in top.
I am 50 now and am well aware that I eat for a number of reasons such as stress, distracting myself and to escape from the world for a while.

My latest blood results show that I am in the Prediabetes category and that I need to take action now to stop my body from developing full diabetes.

I am looking at trying a low carb high fat eating plan as I have heard good reports of it. I believe in Scandanavia it is increasingly popular as a way of preventing the development of full diabetes.

Although I don't eat a great deal of pure sugar I do have a carb heavy diet and it's no surprise that those are the foods I choose to binge on as well.

For sweet flavours I tend to use Diet Coke and the diet cordial drinks. I am hoping to replace both with sparkling water.

The blood results have scared me and I want to do something now.

Hi @Droosie That sounds like a good plan. Before I was diagnosed I had terrible carb cravings due to insulin resistance. They would overwhelm me and I thought I was going mad as I didn't know what was going on. Adopting a low carb way of eating has stopped that. It smooths out the blood sugar spikes and dips. Things are a lot calmer now and mood swings greatly reduced. Good luck.

Good start ... far better than the alternative. You'll find after a while those cravings for carbs will disappear. I for one, HATE sugary stuff and it is a vile taste

LCHF isn't just popular in Scandinavia .... it is growing exponentially everywhere to control this condition. Grasp that chance as many others don't get that warning and if if they do, they think it won't happen to them.

Best of luck

I hope this ends up being a way to not only improve blood sugars but perhaps help with your ED. I am a reluctant convert to LCHF myself--it really works. Yo-yo-ing is so hard on the body & brain; I hope this change can be something more than another diet. Best wishes with it, and feel free to post for food advice--the folks here are quite helpful with recipe ideas, and even with "what are good substitutes when I'm craving carbs" type of questions.

Thank you all for your thoughts and good wishes.

Have to go through my cupboards now and sort out what needs to go. My 13 year old will follow this way of eating too once I start.

Got a really good book about this way of eating somewhere so will find it and reread it all.

I've heard that this way of eating is good for Binge Eating Disorder and I think I have to approach this quite clinically as something I am doing for my health.

If I think of it that way it seems easier.

my thoughts are with you @Droosie
the challenge is in altering your thoughts at those stressful moments and I really wish you all the best in achieving your goal
do keep posting how you progress !!!!

Welcome to the Forum, Droosie. There are so many people with this disorder and good on you for having the motivation to tackle it. I would recommend reducing carbs moderately to begin with, and 'eating to your meter'. You may be surprised how quickly those cravings are a thing of the past! All the very best to you

Thank you, yes I am planning to start with a moderate r suction rather than a "Boot camp" style cold turkey reduction.

I joined a walking group today as well....which will proceed to a running group once I feel fit enough. It wasn't far, just 2.5kms round a country park but it was lovely.

Hi Droosie

I am a recovering binge eater of 60+ years experience so I had my share of failures and success, hence I will try not to preach. Two pieces of advice:
1. Check out Overeaters Anonymous - a great worldwide organisation that's also in the UK. Based on regular meetings and support groups. They have excellent literature and on line support as well. The web site is www.oagb.org.uk.
2. You do not have to struggle on your own as there are a lot of people in the above organisation ready to give you plenty of support. It seems to me that the successful management or treatment of binge eating has different dynamics to diabetes or depression etc. I think you will get appropriate and specific support there (I do not in any way mean to discount posts by people on this site).

Best wishes in your efforts to get on top of this affliction - it a real bummer when it partners up with diabetes. So go for it, you can find the tools that will work for you.

Hi, welcome and good luck!

If you are anything link me (and I am rather carb-sensitive) you may have to keep progressively lowering carbs until the cravings go away.
- so don't get dispirited if they don't disappear until you have stepped the carbs down a few times.

My experience is that I have different food/carb cravings depending on whether it is physical/chemical (aka carb addiction) or emotional (emotional eating). It was the carb addition that was making me feel helpless, and I don't get it now, unless I eat too many carbs, and then I know exactly how to deal with it.

The emotional eating (tired, frustrated, distraction, sometimes angry) are in some ways easier (for me) because I know they are emotional and not physical, and I have learned that I find it easier to deal with emotion if I let rip, rather than bottling it up.

Hope that helps.

Dear Droosie, i have had a life addiction on diet coke and it might explain my digestive troubles. I found replacing by minéral water not too difficult but i still get an urge for coke. Pré diabetes too but hyperinsulin too. I find LCHF difficult because of cholestrol problems so am LCMF (medium fat; my terminology) and that seems to Work . My only advice is to take this in steps. One step at a Time; dont try to do everything at once. I had a very mild binge eating disorder, once a month i would eat my fridge but it was only when i was super anxious. Have you tried CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy)? Just a thought?

Best

Just to say, I sometimes find myself eating all the food in the house like my life depends on it, but after about 18 months of LCHF I find it happens less and less often, and that because everything in the house is LCHF, it has had no noticeable detrimental affect on my BG or cholesterol, both of which are continuously decreasing, as is my weight. I've found that if I don't obsess about it, don't give myself a hard time, and eat as much as a want when I have a meal, I rarely need to overeat, often eat a smaller meal than I would have before, and simply don't have cravings any more. I hope LCHF works as well for you as it has for me xx
