Since diagnosis I've found I get drunk on only one or two small glasses of wine.
One effect you might want to test for is that dry wine (white or red) lowers my blood sugar and offsets the effect of a bigger meal than usual or one with higher carbs (e.g a bit or rice/popadom with a curry). When I go out to eat I always include a glass of wine now and a walk home!
If I'm in the pub, I'll eat a decent meal beforehand and a few crisps whilst having a drink.
Everyone's different though so test, test, test!
Would avoid things like alco pops as they are full of extra sugar. Vodka doesn't seem to have the blood sugar lowering effect that dry wine does.
