Bit confused

I’ve started eating fewer carbs but my blood sugars 2 hrs after eating are often higher than before the change.

I used to occasionally have carb-free meals previously and test below 6, now I’m getting high 6s and 7s. Does it take time to adjust? I guess I have to cut protein if not!

(I’m t2 and on Linagliptin)

Hi there, I know you are on medication so be careful about that but what are your meals currently like?

I’m a bit confused. Do you mean the post meal readings now are higher than they were for similar meals weeks/months/years ago ? What about your pre meal readings? Are you starting out higher? How much are you rising by?

Have you seen a general deterioration in your diabetes? Over what period of time?

yes, higher for the same meals a month or two ago. Rising from typically low 5s before meals to high 6s/low 7s whereas previously was from low 5s to high 5s/low 6s, despite eating more carbs then.

Feel like I’m doing everything “right” otherwise — hba1c down from 81 to 39 over last couple of years and have lost three stone.

Was wondering if I needed more fat or some time for the liver to adjust or something (I’m really a beginner with the intricacies of low carb) or if I just need to eat less! Am also starting to wonder if these test strips are a bit off although they’re in date.

Hi! Mostly protein and veg — salmon and broccoli, chicken and cheesy mashed cauliflower, stuff like that. Had Diet Doctor meatballs, cauliflower and salad for tea. According to diabetic nurse the meds won’t cause hypos (I know they can be wrong but have found that to be the case so far) so not too worried about that.

Sorry one last question. How long have you been back to low carb? It could simply be you need a little time to flush out the store glucose and adjust to lower levels (your liver will try and maintain whatever it’s used to for a while). That all said it’s less than 2mmol rise and really quite good still.

It’s been 2 or 3 weeks so I guess it’s early days and I had my second vaccine before that, so fingers crossed my liver just needs a bit more time to settle — think I just needed to hear that from someone else, thank you!

It isn’t too bad a rise I know, just felt weird to see higher numbers than I’d had for the same meals before. Oh well, will keep going!

the vaccines have altered a fair few peoples normals for a while. Keep at it. You’re doing the right things.

thank you, I will! The vaccine really affected my sugars that first week but thought it had improved after that — I guess it could still be a factor though.
