Hi All,

More of a post to share. I am on half insulin as I'm still in the honeymoon phase. I've gone from 1 unit to 10g of carbs to 0.5 unit to 10g of carbs.

For my evening meal I've had 138g of carbs and taken 6 units novorapid.

Just sat watching tv and two hours later felt a bit ****** like I do when I'm feeling high. I tested my bloods and was 3.9

I just can't wait for my pancreas to give up completely so I have full control because it's so bloody sporadic my production of insulin.

Thanks for reading

Dan

Mine is quite similar, could eat the exact same thing everyday and still get hypos :(
I currently have 5 units of novo with meals but been told not to inject more...just to not eat more than 15g carbs :/

Hi Dan, that's one heck of a lot of carbs for one meal. May I suggest you consider cutting right back so you do not need to inject so much insulin thus avoiding any major lows. It's very hard to 2nd guess a wonky pancreas so perhaps fill up on carb free stuff until your pancreas decides to pop it's clogs for good.

Yeah, I started well when I was diagnosed 4 months ago but I've kind of got to a stage where I'm like ahh I'll just do a bit extra insulin. I'm due an appointment with the dietician soon so I can get back on track with it all.

I'm in the same boat. My ratio is 1unit for 22g of carbs, so to help out I try to eat low carb and since starting that (max70g of carbs per meal) I've got thing under control fairly well. Most meals I eat 40-55g of carbs.

The next that has helped is getting a pen that give half units. If you don't have a half unit pen you should look into it's so helpful.

I find now that my meal bolus is has been fairly constant but it's my long acting that I have to adjust every couple weeks. Perhaps you need to re assess yours?

Hi

Totally understand ur frustration. I'm 6 months in and have the same random days. I'm on one unit per 25 carbs. But some days I have the same meal and the same insulin and I hypo, next day the same and I go high.

I've noticed now that I can't get away with just estimating insulin, I have to be more accurate as I think my insulin production is switching off and I can't get away with as much tolerance now.
Yep the only time I'm in full control is when I low carb - just need to find the will power to do that from somewhere :-/

Oh also, quick point, was ur meal high in fat? As it might be taking longer than 2 hours to digest if so. Did u go up after?

I am going to take one day at a time, low carbing is all in the preparation. Shopping on the way home and prepare lunch and breakfast to bring into work with me. I will I will I will. (I probably won't)

You don't have to go totally low carb.. but like 30-40 grams of carbs per meal has helped me significantly.

But yeah Emm said about the high fat thing - for example Pizza - You can count that and think "Oh yeah thats like 100g of carbs", and eat like 5 slices after you bolus and then in 2 hours you will be low. The reason here is that all the cheese and fat lower the glycemic index and stretch out the digestion time to were your insulin peaks like an hour before your meal digestion...

The moral here is - Things with lots of fats slow food digestion and cause you to go low mid way through, so my advice is just to avoid high fat meals.....and high carb meals.... Everything in moderation right!?

Nice one, I've an appointment next month with the dietician so hopefully I can also go through some more meal ideas, I got bored of raw carrot and celery within a week, I know there's so much more but it's a pain in the **** as the wife doesn't like a lot of it so we end up double shopping which can hurt the pocket at times. But I will definitely drop carbs lower from now on, and fats ;-)

Thanks
