Bit of an update from me but I thought I'd post it in here as I still feel very "newly diagnosed" and it might be encouraging to others who are just getting their diagnoses.
Just had my first appointment with my DN today after being diagnosed mid-January and finally got the results of my HbAC1 which was taken at the end of Jan. I was sitting at 96 which is very high, and I'm not surprised at all. However since my initial diagnosis, I have been going low carb. I've found that I end up sitting between 60-80g of carbohydrates a day and BG tests show that I seem to be handling that well. Most readings from me at the moment are around mid 5s to mid 6s - which is a big improvement from my initial fasting BG done at the doctors which was 15!
I've been on Metformin for around 4 weeks. Starting on 500mg a day and the expectation was that this was going to increase over time. However I didn't get any instructions about increasing my dose so I've kept on with the singular 500mg dose a day and waited until I could chat to the DN about it at my appointment. Considering my BG numbers have been okay when I've been testing I wasn't too concerned about waiting a while to discuss. Was really happy to hear from DN that she doesn't want me to increase and if we can get my HbAC1 down at the next test (early May) then I can come off it completely - so looking forward to hopefully achieving that!
I have been sent home with a BP machine to check over a 7 day period, which I'm a bit nervous about. I'm going to start taking readings from tomorrow, but did a couple practice runs today and anytime I even think about it or get the cuff on I get really anxious and I can see my pulse shoots up. So not sure how I'm going to get on with that over the next week!
But other than that, really positive news so far. I'm happy that the lifestyle changes I have been making are helping and it's really motivating me to keep going and make lasting changes
