Hi i was diagnosed with type 2, 6 months ago , i was put on one 500mg of metformin a day, recently i felt unwell and suffering bloating, , i went for a blood test and my levels have raised from 47 to 64 , i saw a GP who was upset that i had only been prescribed one 500mg metformin a day, she upped it to two 500mg a day for a month then said 4 a day next month , the problem i have is bloating when i eat , it is painful and i go tight around my stomach and my kidney area, i am seeing a nurse next week but am fed up over this bloating , any advice would be welcome thanks .

Do you take the metformin on an empty stomach? It's notorious for gastro-intestinal upsets, and sometimes that can be remedied by having your meal first.... If that has been tried and failed, you could request the slow release version, which can be kinder on the gut. No guarantees though, just something to try.

(Your profile states you're prediabetic; you might want to alter that to say T2, so we can fine tune any answers we give.)

Well, there's more in the world than metformin... You wouldn't be the first who couldn't tolerate it. (And neither was I! That was why I switched to low carb eating.) There's a whole bunch of different diabetes meds yet to try: metformin is just the first stop, but certainly not the last and only possibility.

Metformin is amazing, cut my BG from terrible to alright in 3 months, but needs to be taken with meals.

A rumour is going around is that it also does odd things with statins. Bloating and upset, its just a rumour, so always consult your healthcare professional before changing your meds.

I had the worst day at work for a long time yesterday. #2 incontinence at work during the day in a meeting. Bicycle clips, other side of room from exit.

My colleagues now invite me to all their meetings to see if it happens again.
