Hello forum

T2D diagnosis 2011.

Currently taking metformin 2 * 500mg per day.

HbA1c hovers around 5.6% - 5.8% (down from about 9.5% when first diagnosed).

Fasting BG around 6 (down from about 18 when first diagnosed).

If I eat low carb my BG barely moves - very stable indeed. 5 to 6.5. If I eat a bowl of porridge (for example) my BG can spike briefly at around 10-12.

Does this matter? My GP seems relaxed but I’m not so sure. My diet seems to have very little effect on my HbA1c though, so perhaps he has a point.

My diet is sporadic. I go through phases of being convinced that LCHF is the key to good health, and other phases where I take a more relaxed approach to (slow release) carbohydrates. Apart from the fluctuating BG I’ve noticed no effect on my health at all. LCHF does empty my wallet more quickly though!

Thanks
Alan.

I struggle with my weight, additionally. LCHF isn’t proving to be helpful with this at the moment, although I’ve had some (temporary) success with it in the past.

It seems that high BG results in our body becoming more insulin resistance, therefore a few carbs that spike you for a short time, may not be harmful unless you repeat it too many times….. But we don’t have a way of knowing what “too many times” is, as it is different for each person, and you don’t know until you notice your overall BG control is not as good.
