Blood glucose doesn't fit a pattern

Hey guys,

I've registered to this forum so I can possibly hear opinions as to why this might happen.

I've been a type 1 Diabetic, diagnosed back in 1999.
My last HbA1C was 6.3
I thought I've had a good control over my diabetes until recently when I bought the Dexcom G6.

Usually I've began exercising only recently to help with reducing my insulin intake. However, now that I have a CGM I have noticed that after having breakfast my BG stays in the mid 10's to mid 11's a whopping 2 hours after food.

I bolus NovoRapid, wait about 20min to know that it has began to work and then eat.

For instance today I woke up with 6.8, bolused, had food 20min after insulin, BG got as high as 11.3 1h after eating, 1.5h after eating in had dropped to 8.9 and 2h it had again risen to 11.4 ?? The same pattern yesterday morning.

During lunch and supper such fluctuations normally do not occur.

PS: Sorry for my English grammar, you could possibly tell I am not a native English speaker hehe

@95michael could you be experiencing “Foot on the Floor” where your liver dumps a load of glucose when you start your day and you become slightly insulin resistant.
It is common to need to prebolus earlier for breakfast because of this.
If you find your levels are returning to normal trying living the time you inject your breakfast bolus by 5 minutes at a time.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

What basal are you prescribed , & when is it taken?

hey guys, thank you very much for your warm welcomes and prompt responses! Highly appreciated.

@rosemaree , absolutely, I'veonly recently began reading about the GI of foods, wow! And yes, experience plays a vital role, however, here I am and havind had it for 22+ years doesn't guarantee I know it all yet.

@In Response , I thought about that also. If it's the liver dumping glucose, is there a way to counteract this? I don't mind waiting to prebolus and wait 20-30min before eating, however, that's not possible during the days I'm at work and everything is hectic.

@Jaylee, I have been using lantus for 10 years now, 24 units at 2200. Could it be that I might need a higher dose of it?

OK? I use Lantus too & like you dose at that time..
Now I can't help you regarding your personal "dosage." (You would need to speak with your HCP on that one.) :)

I don't do breafast. Maybe a "brunch" or just lunch.? But what I do notice on work days during my morning routine in prep for work (Inspite of waking with a respectable BG.) is a rise by aprox 3mmol which I need to correct?
So you may possibly be experiencing "foot to the floor" liver dump?

How are your BGs over night?
Is it possible to do a "basal test" in the early part of the day that gives issue?
Which would mean skipping breakfast in order to asses the basal. Till lunch?
You can always go back to your normal brecky routine once you've checked it out..

Hey again, @Jaylee

Thanks for the info, maybe that's what I should do .. a basal test to find the correct dose.

Most likely I receive a glucose dump, although, I've never had this chance of checking it until 3 days ago when I received my CGM.
My BGs overnight, according the dexcom, are pretty stable, varying between 5 and 9. They tend to drop from 8-9 to 5 as the night progresses. However, as soon as I get out of bed, my BG rises by 2-3 mmols just the first half an hour. By then I've already injected insulin, frightetened to leave my organism without novorapid to see how high it'd get lol.

Thank you for your input!
