I hope it's okay to start a third thread but thought I'd best ask about this in this section

I'm now diagnosed as Type 2 and I was wondering if I need to get a blood glucose meter to check my blood at home? The doctor said today that you only need on if you run the risk of having low blood sugars, if you're going to drive, for eg.

My mum and uncle are both Type 2 and they've both got the meters. I'm just wanting to help myself a little here. I thought I'd ask you guys here what you thought. Thanks :)

Sorry I haven't seen any of your other posts what medication are you taking?

Novomix 30, Victoza, metformin 2000mg sr (but not taking them as they play havoc with my insides,

Sorry Crmsonclient, never thought to say. I'm going onto Metformin and a diet regime. I spoke to the doctor and this is what the nurse will do on Monday.

If it's only diet and metformin you won't have to test before driving, however most on here recommend to start off with is to test just before every meal and then 2 hours after eating to see what causes you to spike

I'm going for an appointment tomorrow for another reason and it's one of the nurses that I see. I'm going to ask if I can have one of the test kits on prescription. I don't mind paying for one but on looking at the prices, it's extortionate. It was something like £25 to £30 just for 50 strips. I don't know where to look that is cheaper for me.

I remember I had to check my mother's readings after her meals and jot down the readings so the nurse had got an idea on how she was maintaining her blood sugars. I'd just like to keep on top of my Diabetes..make sure it doesn't creep up. I'd also like to have a rough idea of what foods to avoid. I hate feeling like the morning after the night before all because I have no idea what is making me feel so rough.

Hi Aldebaran,

I bought my meter and strips (and lancets) from here: http://www.homehealth-uk.com/medical/blood_glucose_monitor_testing.htm when I was diagnosed a month ago. As for the strips, I used a promo code they print out on all the orders you get, which you can use when ordering lancets and/or test strips.
Promo code: 5 packs - 264086
Promo code: 10 packs - 975833

If I remember correctly, 5 packs of test strips (50 strips per pack) cost £26.00, yep, £26 for 250 test strips!

I also use MyLifestyle to record my readings for Blood Pressure and Blood Glucose.

Good luck

Dee

Thanks Dee. I've been looking at the link you gave me. It's a relief to know that there are cheaper strips, etc. Not sure whether the mmol/L or mg/dL meter is the best. Can't you tell that I'm new to this! I can't have a meter from the doctors, I asked today so I'm going to get this one. I'm using the promo code you put here too. As Tesco says..'every little helps'. Cheers Dee.

in the uk you want mmol/L

no problem Aldebaran, glad to be of help, in UK we use mmol/l as the unit of measurement.

I do my tests when I wake up, as I sit down to eat and 2hrs after eating and use the myLifestyle site to keep a log of my results but there are plenty of good apps for smart phones out there.

Hugs,

Brill and cheers Dee. I've just said in another thread that I'm just getting used to the terminology I was hoping you would answer me so now, I'm going to go and order the meter now. I'm grateful for the help. All the best Dee.

My meter/lancets and strips are now ordered. The promo code really helped Dee. Great saving there. Thanks again.

The promo code keeps on giving lol. It seems to be a permanent code but don't worry about losing it as they put a sticker on everything they send you :)

Excellent..even better Dee. Again, I'm very grateful for the link as I couldn't find anything like this for the price. The lancets are cheap enough, compared to the strips anyway. The codes are a real help. I'd have ordered the 10 box but being scowled at by hubby for an hour afterwards is a bit off putting lol. Actually he's impressed with it himself
