You need more energy, whilst working out of any significant exercise, for example tennis players drinking quick glucose. Your liver provides this, it's called a liver dump. If you don't have the insulin to convert glucose, then your liver intervenes.

Strenuous, aerobic exercise causes a stress reaction and will raise levels as the hormones will cause the liver to dump glucose, gentler exercise like a jog or walk will lower your glucose. If I am out running and can feel that i'm going low I will do a fast sprint for about 5 mins which raises my glucose levels.
