Hi everyone. Its my first post:). I wanted to ask... im type 2 should i have to buy my own testing machine. About now this time of morning i start to feel shaky so i have a cupa & 2 malted milk biscuits. I just thought perhaps i need to know what my blood sugar levels are. Alison x

It's highly unlikely your GP will prescribe a meter unless you are on insulin. However, no harm asking him/her..

Hello and welcome,

Yes you do need a meter but will have to buy your own unless you are on insulin or similar drugs. (Metformin isn't one of those drugs). If you were feeling shaky it may have been low sugars or equally it may have been high sugars, or something else entirely. Without a meter you would never know. Eating biscuits may have been the correct action, or may have been the opposite.

Many of us here use the Codefree because the test strips are about the cheapest there are, and you need a lot of test strips.
Try here for the Codefree meter and strips

Pharmacies don't sell them, and don’t forget to declare you are diabetic in order to avoid any VAT.

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk
5 packs 264086
10 packs 975833

(Other meters are available!)

Hi @Gingerbird - It's vital to have a Blood Glucose Meter - It allows you to test and see which foods you can eat and those that you need to avoid in your diet. Plus it will give you much tighter control owning a meter. :)

Hi and welcome @Gingerbird
I found a meter the most helpful tool to bring my blood sugars down. It enabled me to see what foods my body could tolerate and what was better avoided. We are all different so I can manage some foods others can't and vice versa.
I also now use the sdcodefree @Bluetit1802 has posted details for as the strips are so much cheaper.
