Blood Pressure

My GP says I have prediabetes and thought my blood sugar was dropping after I ate which was causing my symptoms. They advised me to monitor the sugar levels to see what was going on. I have been doing this and after eating anywhere from 1-3 hours later the readings are averaging at 9.8. My question is at this level would this have an effect on my Blood Pressure? Would it go up or down?

I don’t know? I’m just wanting to know if this would affect the Blood Pressure.
It could do.. mine used to be high but has come down with low carb eating and some weight loss..
Do have have a few extra pounds?
Your doctors explanation of blood sugars dropping after eating sounds a bit odd? What were the symptoms? High blood sugar seems to be your problem rather than low..

I’m actually slightly underweight and the Gastro consultant is trying to get me to put weight in. After I eat I feel dizzy/faint , really tired and sometimes I sweat and my blood pressure drops. The Consultant thought the drop in BP was due to low blood sugar.

Well if you are getting readings of 9.8 mmol/l after eating it certainly isn't low blood sugar.... low would be sub 4.0 at most..
Are you measuring your blood pressure when you get these feeling of dizzyness? Are you taking any medication at all?

I took the readings when I felt the symptoms. I’m on an inhaler for asthma and an antihistamine but the Doctors know about them. They can’t figure out what’s causing the BP to drop.

Do you mean will your blood pressure come down or go up after eating?

Blood pressure can increase after eating, especially after a big meal, and after eating certain foods. It can also decrease, particularly in older people. Take your pick. It can do either.

So how do they know the BP is dropping? So far you have only told us about blood sugar readings? Is your blood pressure actually low when you have these feelings post eating?

I had a blood pressure monitor for a week to record the readings and the GP and Cardioligist confirmed it was dropping and was low.

Thanks for that but it doesn’t matter what I eat the BP still drops. They say postprandial hypotension usually affects the elderly or people with high BP which is not me. Everything else was ruled out. This is why my Consultant thought maybe my Blood Sugar was dropping which obviously it isn't. I will give the Consultant the readings and see what he is going to do. .

Yes, tell the consultant what your findings are. If he doesn't know, then I doubt we can help. I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Thanks for the replies. I didn’t think the high sugar readings made the BP drop but I just wanted to be sure. Will let the Consultant know on Tuesday as it’s the holiday weekend.

Keep testing, especially when you feel dizzy etc. and keep notes of what you have been doing, such as exercise, eating, sleeping, whatever.
