Hi I was wondering what my blood sugar should be like after a run? I was diagnosed 4weeks ago after an operation on an abcess. I am eating a low carb diet and taking metformin (500) twice a day plus a statin. I started running 3 weeks ago and did about 6 k today, I ate lunch (blt with cheese salad about 2.5 hours ago and had a pear just before my run.
My blood glucose level was 7.3 which is worse than normal. How does exercise affect it? I am overweight so the exercise is likely to be anaerobic. Thanks in advance for any advice :) Phil

It is an unusual fact that blood glucose levels go up as we do strenuous exercise.
Whereas just walking will lower your blood glucose levels.

That's just the way the body works to make sure you have enough glucose to help you through the exercise. It's called a liver dump, you also could get this in the mornings to prepare for the day. It's called the dawn phenomenon.

You will normalize shortly after, unless you use glucose to recover, I suggest simple water to rehydrate yourself. It works!

It's strange because i ran on Monday with an empty stomach and my blood level was 6.5, then on Tuesday i just had an Apple before my run and my blood was 6.2. I guess i need to experiment a little. I think one thing that doesnt help the detective work is that i am increasing the distance i run by about 15-20% a day so i suppose my Liver isnt sure how much to dump either :)
