Blood Sugar levels in the morning

Hi

I am after some ideas on what my mum can eat for breakfast. She is on oral medication and 0.6 of Victoza and her blood sugar levels have been rising quite a bit, firstly on waking up and also 2 hours after eating breakfast. She has tried bran flakes, porridge (recently porridge with cinnamon - which I thought was supposed to be good??) but they are still around 11.0 two hours after eating. She cannot stomach fish of any kind in the morning and she really wants something quick and easy. I know eggs are good but what are other good alternatives?

Also, the fact that her sugar is high on waking: should she be having a snack the night before? I've heard that this will lower sugar a bit in the morning as her last meal is usually around 7:30pm.

Hi. You need to be aware that blood sugar first thing in the morning can be affected by overnight glucose dumps by the liver so is not a good test of overall blood sugar. You are better testing 2 hours after the main meal of the day. Bran flakes and porridge can be rather high in carbs. I have home-made no-sugar added muesli with added seeds etc. I also for a change have egg and bacon as proteins and fat have little effect on blood sugar.
