Blood Sugar levels question

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Diabetes about 18 months ago with a HBA1c level of 8.7, this came down to 7.2 but for most recent test went back upto 9.2 . I am also having other symptoms that my neurologist things are unlikely to be caused by diabetes and he suspects that these might be caused by another as un yet diagnosed neurological disorder that I hope to hear more about this week. My question is would a HBa1c level of 9.2 normally point to someone being fatigued all the time with little energy and barely able to the normal household tasks? And also would this account for the periods of real confusion and feeling like I am remote controlling myself(I know it sounds weird but it closest that I can think of). The thing is I have seen a doctor for work as I have been off for a while and my own doctor doesnt give me the impression that levels like this would cause this long term fatigue/confusion and I am wondering if maybe this is being wrongly attributed to diabetes when it has another cause?

I was just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences that might be able to help me answer my question?

Thanks!

Hi FP.
Welcome to the Forum.

An HbA1c of 9.2 would equate to an average Bg reading of around 12 mmol/l plus. In reality this could mean some of your Bg readings could be much higher at various times of the day.
High Bg levvels could cause all the symptoms that you describe. However, there are also many other conditions which could cause similar symptoms. If your present GP thinks this is normal then I suggest you see another GP or change Doctor's.

Ken.

Nah my GP doesnt think its normal she is pretty good and already referred me to an endocronologist, I am just trying to get an idea is all as like I said the tiredness is pretty constant and I know the doc I saw for work didnt seem to think it should be affecting this bad from what I can gather as he never sent me a copy of his report like he said he would when I signed the permission form on the condition that I got a copy of his report before my employer.

Since I got my blood sugar numbers down I have realised that the lack of energy, regular headaches and a few other things were diabetic problems.

I am not medically qualified, but I am very familiar with neurological illnesses through my work. Fatigue is a major problem with many neurological illnesses. You need to get those numbers down quickly so that your neurologist can see what s/he is dealing with, that will make diagnosis easier and the effect of any treatment will be more apparent. You will give yourself a fighting chance for dealing with your health.

Do you test you blood sugar? If not get a meter and start testing, but you do need to know what you are doing as this may be expensive, ask your GP for a regular prescription for strips. Look up http://www.bloodsugar101.comfor useful information on getting your BS down. Try keeping a food diary, even before you start testing.

Take a look around the food and diet forums. You have to find something that works for you that is sustainable in the longer term. From what you have said about your fluctuating HbA1c, you have had better control but you have not been able to keep it up. There could be all kinds of reasons for this, stress being one of them, especially if you are worried about a neurological illness. Cortisol is the stress hormone and it does have an impact on what your body does with insulin.

Then ask for it, it is about you. If they have done this they are in breach of the Data Protection Act. Complain. This is taken very seriously by the powers that be.
