I have Type 2 diabetes and am confused with blood sugar levels. My previous reading was 61 and present reading is 55 and the doctor has prescribed Metformin tablets to bring the sugar levels down. But what I don't understand is 61 and 55 what? and is there a chart for me to check. Thanks in advance for any help received.

53% is the first NHS goal I believe ...
@Andrew Colvin is excellent with conversions ....so are other helpful people ...I always need help I like the old money way best ....x

It's a shame that doctors don't seem to want to discuss the numbers with patients. I have yet to have a health care professional discuss blood sugar targets with me. But I have figured out a huge amount from this forum and on-line research. You should do the same. You should try to get them to prescribe you a personal blood glucose meter, then search on this forum for advice on when to measure and how to use that info. You should be able to get your HbA1c down farther with dietary changes. Your numbers are not super high and the downward trajectory is great, but you'll probably need to reduce carbohydrate intake to get the numbers down more. I would encourage you to post any more questions you have here on the forum- they will for sure be answered by people who have and are going through the same as you.

These numbers are your HbA1c a measure of how much sugar your blood has been carrying around over the last 3 months or thereabouts. The doctors declare that above 48 and you are diabetic. This page has a good explanation of it all http://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html

The units are in mmol/mol but that probably doesnt help much but mol is basically a measure of concentration of a solution.

You can always ask for an explanation, and also a print out of your blood test results. I find these print outs are essential to me. I have them all. If there are elements you don't understand, you can Google them. It won't just have been a glucose test or HbA1c, it may well also have been cholesterol, liver and kidney functions. Please ask for the print outs.

Didn't say anything about them declaring you as cured just that they label you at 48. Out of the 3 tests that I have had only one has been above 48 the others 40 and 35 but still I am labelled

(sorry just a bit of frustration with the system and an out of date NHS)
