Hi guys
I have to have a colonoscopy and have been advised not to eat anything after 09:00. I have to then drink 2 litres of laxatives to empty me out, nothing further to eat and only sips of water up to 08:00 the following day.
So basically 23 hours without any food. My procedure is booked for 10:00. How do I avoid going Hypo? I'm Type 2:on insulin and Metformin.

Thanks in advance
Bear

I think you need to talk to your diabetes team about the insulin.

I hope the procedure goes well.
Trying to speak to anyone at my surgery these days is almost an impossibility. If all else fails, I will drive to the surgery and collapse in a heap and see if that works.
I do understand how busy the NHS system is, plus the diabetic specialist I see at the clinic only works part time.
I appreciate your comments anyway

I don't ues any diabetes medication so I apologise if I am getting this wrong but if you are not going to be eating, why would you need to take insulin and risk a hypo.

My brother has just had similar he’s not diabetic but has heart failure and they used a different protocol on him that was given to the colonoscopy team by his heart consultant, you need to speak to the hospital team doing your colonoscopy and they will liaise with the diabetic team at the hospital to set your protocols (hopefully)

I was advised by the colonoscopy department to use hard boiled sweets like barley sugar if I had a hypo (just not any red sweets).
I'd ring that department as they'll be used to having patients on insulin.
Diabetes department weren't told I was having a colonoscopy or an endoscopy.

What kind of insulin are you on? Basal (long acting) only, a mixed type insulin, or a basal and bolus insulin (long acting and mealtime insulin)?

You should have gotten instructions on how to adjust your meds and how to trat a hypo if it happened.
Please contact the hospital where you will get your colonoscopy, and urgently try to get in touch with your surgery as well.

This completely depends on the way an individual diabetic is managed, and on how much they can rely on their own insulin production.
Insulin also deals with the glucose produced by the liver, which can send you up to dangerously high levels even in the absence of food.

speak to your medical professional on this one.

And to add to @Antje77 's comment, some T2s still produce plenty of insulin (just not enough for their food and their level of insulin resistance) while others don't produce much insulin any more and would need insulin even if they fasted. It depends massively on the individual.
