Hi all,

relatively new to this via type 2. I’ve lost/losing weight and following low carb diet. I am taking Metformin at breakfast and at dinner and I am measuring my mmol using a Tee 2 plus.

My blood glucose seems to be all over the place, and particularly high in the mornings. Example today, my pre-breakfast Reading was 7.4 and post 8.2.

I had 2 x boiled eggs, a mug of green tea and 2 pints of water.

I understand that my liver will compensate overnight and produce glucose at what it expects to be a normal level until it slowly reduces. But why would I expect to see levels of 7.5 and above (up to 9.2) when I do follow low carbs?

Well, it would depend how long you’ve been following low carb and what your numbers were like to start with. What are your readings like the rest of the day. Your post meal rise is fine for that example and the morning reading is often the last one to drop.

I’ve just looked back at my own records and it was a good 7 months after diagnosis before my morning readings consistently dropped into the mid/high fives. Unfortunately I didn’t start testing right away, so I don’t have the absolute highest numbers.

So long as you’re getting post meal readings within 2 mmols of where you started, I wouldn’t worry too much - it’s easy to compare with others but not a good strategy as change happens at a different pace for everyone.

Brilliant, that’s just what I wanted to know.

I started low carbing in the new year, so about 4 month in, so hopefully I’ll start to see progress soo.

thanks for your help

Just as another view I’ve been very low carb/keto with some 18/6 intermittent fasting for nearly 2 yrs. I never tested before diet change but I still typically get low to mid 6’s fasting with only a rare 5 that I struggle to know how to replicate. It started around the low 7’s. It’s extremely rare I even get to a +2 rise after a meal and the highest I ever get is 7 something. Hb1ac low 40’s since diagnosis at 55.

Some of us are simply more stubborn, especially in the mornings, than others.

The only other ways to tackle this seem to be fasting either more often or for longer or sticking more rigorously to strict keto. (More difficult with a large family to feed/dislike of the kitchen than solo). These methods have good results when/if you are ready for them.
