Blood Sugar query

Good afternoon all,

I am a 32 year old ***NON-Diabetic***, male who has diabetes in my family. My grandmother had diabetes and my father currently has type 2 diabetes.

I used to live with my father, and, on occasion, would test my blood sugar levels with a testing kit. This was usually first thing in the morning and my scores were always 5.4-5.6 - never higher.

Cut a long story short and I haven't checked my levels in over a year. Over the past couple of days, I noticed that I was going to the toilet more frequently (although I did drink a very large cup of tea about 30-60 minutes before going to bed last night). I also noticed I was quite tired earlier this afternoon and so decided to buy the Accu-Check Mobile testing meter (with a cartridge).

I've just run two tests ( a few minutes apart) and found that my scores were 6.1 and 6.0. I had eaten about 90 minutes prior to this (some marble cake) and about an hour before that had a large bowl of soup with some slices of brown bread.

Taking all of that into consideration, are my scores of 6.1 and 6.0 normal? I'd say that the last thing I ate (the marble cake) was at least 90 minutes, if not 2 hours prior to this. There are conflicting websites out there and some say it's normal but others do not.

I'd welcome any opinions or information on this. I can be of a nervous disposition at times so your responses will be appreciated.

None of us are medical professionals, so if you're concerned about your health you should always check with a doctor.

But I've tested my non-diabetic friend's blood sugar after eating (approx 90 mins) and it was 7.6. Your levels look fine :)

Hi @Daz33 If you are concerned I agree with @azure get your GP (nurse) to check you blood sugar levels, or many pharmacies will do it for you too.

Have a look at some of the info on the welcome pages for advice on diabetes and how to mange it and thus hopefully avoid becoming diabetic. Many diabetics control their carbohydrate intake, both in terms of type and quantity.

There isn't much information about non-diabetic levels, but as a guideline, this site states for non-diabetics:

before meals 4 to 5.9
at least 90 minutes after under 7.8

So your one off test looks fine. If you are at all worried, see your doctor and ask for a test.
