Hi

I havebeen low carbing for about 6 months, initially in the first few weeks I just halved my carbs (eg half a jacket pot, 1 slice toast) while i researched low carbing properly. I could probably be described as moderate carbing as when i log on fatsecret my carbs are usually between 50 and 70 g per day, not ultra low.

However for 6 months this has served me well, lower fasting sugars, lower hba1c, lower triglycerides etc etc.
#Over the last month I have noticed that my blood sugar has just crepy up slowly. Initially i put it down to having a chest infection, you know how being ill messes up your sugars and didnt think toomucha bout it as i thought it would return to normal when i was well again, and they werent super high. But now 4 weeks later they are still a little higher than they were.

I have spent the last two weeks really watching my carbs (I did over indulge in parsnips about 2 weeks ago as well) but today my fasting blood sugar is 8.1. I had got them down to the 6's. I know I have been really watching my carbs.

Any ideas. my daily carbs for the last two weeks have been between 50 and 90g.

Does your body get used to low carb and is it not as effective as time goes on?

Is my body protesting to something?

Any ideas would be gratefully recived.

Thanks

the only idea I have is that with time we either make less insulin or else have less sensitivity to the insulin that we do make

so cutting out all starchy veggies seems a practical step to take

I have recently started taking a supplement called blood sugar balance and it seems to be very good - perhaps it is a useful one for you to invest in also

Do you only test your fasting reading, or do you test before and 2 hours after your main meal?

You may be getting a touch of Dawn Phenomenon (when your liver kicks in with a shot of glucose to get you going in the morning), and the results around your main meal should give you a better idea of how your insulin is working. The difference between your "before" reading and your "2 hours after" reading should be no more than 1 or 2 points.

Also have a really good look at your carb intake. There's a lot of difference between half a small jacket potato and half a large one! I know - I've been there!

hi thanks for the replies.

i will look at that supplement, but i am hoping not to add to my tablet list.

I really am careful about my carbs now, no bread, pasta, potatoes, i will occasionally have some crackerbread if I need a crunch or something sandwichlike.

I am on metformin, sitagliptin, and gliclazide (1/2 tablet once a day).

I suppose i am wondering if your body will become tolerant to the meds or even just to the way of eating and not work as efficiently.

Thanks
