Blood sugar still too high

Hi, I'm on metformin and sitagliptin, eating a low carb diet and my mmol is still too high. Above 8 before food and above 10 after food. Any suggestions that might help?
 
Hi @smokijoe24, welcome.

When you say low carb, what do you eat typically through the day?
 
Breakfast- porridge and a banana
Lunch- salad with cheddar cheese no dressing
Dinner- chicken stir fry
Snacks- hand full of hazelnuts or walnuts and a slice of water melon
 
Apart from breakfast that looks OK. But many can't cope with porridge and bananas are full of sugar and best avoided - maybe also the watermelon.

For breakfast you could try Greek yoghurt and a few berries or a cooked breakfast with whatever combination of eggs/bacon/tomato/mushrooms/cheese takes your fancy.
 
The first thing that jumps out at me is your breakfast, which will not be doing you any favours at all. Porridge is very carby, and bananas are the worst fruit you could choose as they are instant release glucose (athletes eat them during competitions). Try bacon and eggs, scrambled eggs, omelettes, unsweetened plain yogurts with a few berries added. Many people advocate we shouldn't eat carbs for breakfast, because our insulin resistance is at its worst. This improves as the day goes on.

The rest doesn't look too bad to me, although it depends what is in the stir fry of course.
 
Two books which might be useful

GI/GL counter by Wynnie Chan (hamlyn) bought mine of eBay for under a fiver. Pocket sized and foods are shown in average portion sized (with weights) also have fat and calorie contents in them. Some food have a high carb content but LOW glycaemic load - meaning they release carbs slowly so they don't spike you.

Another book (not one that I liked but many do) is Carbs and Cals which is pretty much a picture book of foods on an average plate/bow (size given) showing different portions so you can see at a glance what your plateful contains. Wasn't for me as I say but many folks swear by it. Comes in a pocket size and a bigger sized one. I think I got mine through either Amazon or the Diabetes UK website

Hope these help and good luck with your quest to lower your bs - remember that the fasting one is the hardest to control. My comments re breakfast just reflect everyone elses
 
Are the 8 and 10 readings after ALL your meals or just breakfast?
