Hi Steve

I was diagnosed Type 2 seven years ago and when I started taking metformin/glicazide, I got myself a free monitor and then asked my GP for the needles and test strips on prescription, which they were happy to do. I dont know if this is still the case as I have seen on this forum that some T2 members have been refused the testers. I think personally I would not be happy to take medication if I didnt know how it was affecting me physically.

Here we go again another person diagnosed as type 2 and not given a meter and tester strips etc. :x

The NHS guidelines for newly diagnosed diabetics is that you should as a newly diagnosed person be given a meter testing strips etc but unfortunately these days it is not the done thing. The PCT's of various GP practices say they cost to much and once more another medical condition comes under doctoring by post code. Some practices will give them but most don't.

I myself was told by my doctor that there was no need to test. Rubbish. How do I know what foods affect me. I was luck my brother that day my brother went out and brought me a Boots meter etc but I wasted 10 strips learning to use the meter.

You will see from everyone on here that nearly all type 2 tests. If you don't how will you know how your body reacts to the food you eat. I was amazed to find that 3 small new potatoes put my BS up to 8.9 post meal it should be no higher then 8.5. I would never realised this had I not tested.

There is a lot been said about testing for type 2s which you will find very helpful.

On this forum possible at the bottom of this page the Bayer Contour is advertised and given free once you fill the form out. The testing strips are if ordered from Bayer £23. from eBAY £16.99. but read the forum Type 2 and questions and see if that will help you with any thing you would like to know. Don't use a chemist as their prices are very high for the testing strips.

Best of luck :)
Sue
