blood sugar testing

I am getting really muddled up, reading the messages on the forums, is 6.1 before breakfast ok ? and around 10.0 two hours after my last meal ? I have type 2 diabetes. Only I read on here someone saying 6.3 was high!! and someone else saying they were not really diabetic as their count was "only" 10.8. I am puzzled !!

It all depends on how well you want to control yourself.

Some say they are not going to allow diabetes to control their life and so are not going to worry about tight control.

Personally I try to keep all my numbers in the 5's and 6's.

I prefer to keep in the 4s and 5s. With the odd 3 in the hot weather

HI
6.1 before breakfast is fine! I have been working on getting better control of my diabeties! I am managing to keep my blood sugar tops at 9. I would prefer having it around the 5-6 at most!
Alot of times we can't control our blood sugars as nature takes over! The best thing is is to keep what is good for you!

Hi calamity.

The Feb 2009 guideline figures a T2 should aim to keep to are as follows:

Fasting (waking) .....................between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals.....................no more than 8.5 mmol/l.

These are the NICE guidelines, not mine. (National Institute of Clinical Excellence UK)
Stay somewhere within these guidelines and you are doing well.

I am also new to this and find what levels are meant to be ok. I seem to read different things and hear different things. For example some people say between 5 and 6 is good, but ive heard others say anything below 6 is low?

I am guesing everybody reacts differently to different GB levels and there fore you need to find your own good balanced one? if so how do you do that because i cant seem to find anything right and always feel ill.

AndreaC.

The levels I gave previously are for a T2. If you can do better than that, well that is fine. If you are always feeling ill I would suspect your levels are not good. Are you testing ?

Ken.

Techincally you are NOT diabetic until your FBG is over 7 or you have had two separate postprandial readings over 11.1

However once you have been diagnosed (or if you are prediabetic) you may find you are able to maintain essentially normal numbers, through a combination of diet, exercise and medication.

Quite how much effort you want to put into this and how successful you are depends on many factors

don't forget to divide her US numbers by 18 for the UK equivalents (A1c stays the same)
