I have been t2 and on insulin for 19 yrs.I have not been able to take my sugars,as i have numbness caused by trapped nerves in my neck.I can take my bs very rarely,but my fingers are so sore.
I have repeatedly asked if i could use the Libre system.It is available im my area,ive been told its for t1 only.I rand diabetes uk,was told if im a driver ,i can use it,also if im having problems with my bs,which i am.I saw another dr,explained the problems im haing,and i asked for a referral for the hosp,that was refused.Ive now got neuropathly in my big toes.Trying to see the dn at the surgery,i have to wait months.What do i do now,as i want to prevent it from getting worst.
 
This may not help you get the libre... but the part about using for driving still only refers to t1"s as previously you were only allowed actual blood tests for driving reasons..

Also if you are driving and not doing blood tests then you are driving illegally as you are required have done a blood test within the last 2 hours at all times when driving

Assuming you told dvla you are on insulin (which is required) whenever you renew your license every 3 years you sign a declaration that you will test before driving, and every 2 hours whilst driving


So my suggestion is that as a minimum you do blood test using alternative site testing (read up on it) is possible to take blood from the ball of you hand the wrist and other places. Some Lancet devices provide a clear cap to make it easier to see when using AST

Doing tests and getting better results will help slow the nerve damage

To clarify this point you can use it as a driver to be legal with the dvla rules above... but you still do not qualify to be prescribed it so would have to self fund

I’m a little puzzled how you can manage to drive safely with the neck issues yet not take blood readings. Though I do understand that a libre might well be simpler. I assume if you are not taking readings then the bs problems are the hb1ac and without testing you must be on fixed doses and not counting carbs?

As searley says you must have informed both DVLA and your insurance company about the insulin use and be testing every two hours and following the rules for readings or else you are driving illegally and possibly without valid insurance cover.

Do you know why the referral to the hospital was refused?

It really does seem you need assistance with less painful testing (warm hands, depth set on tester, rotation etc if not already doing these things), reducing carbs a little so the insulin you take is more effective perhaps, maybe a carb counting course and a different insulin regime. All of which a referral may help with. I’d go back to the gp and ask again and demand help or referral.

just had a call from the surger,im not allowed to have a referral to the hospital.
 
In the meantime can we help you? What specific problems are you having and what have you tried?

Do you know what your current levels are in numbers? Do you know if you’ve ever had c peptide tested to see how much insulin your body is actually producing?

Most of type 2 in here use diet to control (or help alongside medication) our bloods. It can be a very powerful tool. How do you eat? Do you manage carbohydrates and sugars?
