Blood test results

Just had the results of my second blood test 7 months after diagnosis. I'm a bit disappointed, but as we all say: it's a marathon not a sprint. I've been reminding myself of this.

Fasting bloods have been mostly 6s and 5s with a couple of 4s and a couple of 7s (no 7 point anything - just 7). I've been on keto since the start, and not deviated once. So I'd expected a better result than 6.3, which apparently puts me in pre-diabetes. I've had some big emotional stuff going on (bereavement, serious illness), but even so my fingerprick readings appeared not to be hugely affected during these times, so I don't really think I can put that as a cause. I'd been hoping to ditch my once-a-day Metformin, but looks like I'd better continue for now.

Nursie read the riot act about my cholesterol in November, but I hadn't been told it was being tested, and so hadn't fasted or gone without coffee. This time I did, and the reading is 45.4. No medication - diet only. No indicated of LDL, HDL or Tri reading, only the total. Apparently they are looking for 41 in a type 2, but whether there is a subdivision for pre-diabetes I don't know (tongue firmly in cheek). Meanwhile I've done a lot of research on cholesterol and the more modern conclusions (from proper peer-reviewed science before anyone accuses me of snake oil) and I'm not greatly bothered but of course Nursie is.

I'm having surgery next week and will need to be on steroids for a fortnight or so. I don't have a problem with that - steroids are sometimes necessary. But of course that will temporarily skew my blood readings. So I'll need enough time to get over that before I sign up for another blood test.

So all in all, I'm rather down about it. I can't go any more keto than full keto, have recently upped my exercise to an hour and a half walking a day (I'm old and that's as much as I can do without falling over) and I already do intermittent fasting. As Churchill said: keep on ******ing on.

Any idea what units they have used?.. those look more like HbA1c numbers than cholesterol.

There's every chance you are right! The new form is way different from the last one, and I'm still trying to decipher it. All the other figures quoted are within range where a range is given. Apologies for confusion. More coffee needed..

Stop your Metformin in advance of the surgery. Very important.

Thank you all for your input.

Oldvatr, special thanks for that as nobody mentioned it at my pre-op consultation. They didn't seem too concerned about the blood-thinners either, which was a worry. Where does the risk lie from the metformin please?

Not sure but lactic acid buildup can be a problem asssociated with it. It may be that an anaesthetic may interfere with the kidney clearance.

This advice is given to me as a heart patient, so may be specific to general not local anaesthesia. Also needs to be stopped if a scan involving a contrast dye might be used such as those used during stenting or angioplasty.

Edit to add: blood thinners sounds a good one to stop too. I have been unable to get any chiropodist to touch my feet as I am on aspirin, and I have to go to the podiatrist specialist instead.

Re blood thinners. It depends what the op is for. I needed to stay on them for my heart procedure.
