Hi All
I am new on here I am 39 male, little over weight 14stone, and I cant stand needles they freak me out. Last week I was at my mums house and cut my finger so she said lets test your blood, so I did and the machine said 9 and now she keeps saying I have diabetes. I have not been to the doctors since I was 15. My question is what food and will doing some fitness really help. as I have not done any fitness since leaving school. just brought some of these urine strips so will check for a few days and if it is up and down I will see the doctor

Thanks

Hi, welcome.

Since your blood test at 9 was 'unplanned' it could be that you could have had some contamination on your finger unless you had just washed them immediately beforehand, so the 9 may be spurious (too high). Nevertheless, if your mum has a meter you could try testing again, immediately before a meal and 2 hours afterwards, and see if it is repeated. If it is 9, yes you should get yourself checked out. And yes, changing diet (reduce all carbohydrates and cut out sugars) coupled with exercise does help.

The reading of 9 means nothing on its own. Did you wash your hands carefully before you tested? When did you last have something to eat or drink? When had you last been exercising (and that includes a walk or light exercise). All these things have a bearing. The urine strips may or may not tell you anything. My urine always tests clear but I am a diabetic. Go to your doctor. Better safe than sorry. It's time you had a routine check up anyway as you haven't been for so many years.

Hi
all I have in the morning was a cup of coffee with no sugar. so when is the best time to check the blood for a normal reading and what is normal. so I can pop around her house and get her to pick my finger

Thanks for the replys

If you are concerned, go see a doc. One random reading from your mother is not a diagnosis !

I know it's horrible going to the doctors - I can relate to that, but for peace for mine you really should go.

They draw the blood from one of the veins in your arm and most of the time your hardly notice it (I always look away). The earlier you catch any condition the easier it is to treat.
