Hello all,

I was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I have had blood taken a few times since diagnosis obviously.

What is the easiest and quickest way to find out my blood type? Contact my GP surgery?

Who is the best medical professional to contact?

Many thanks

It is unusual for a G.P. to request your blood group when it is being tested for diabetes related matters. You would be tested if you were donating blood,( not applicable to any diabetic on insulin) and if you were to receive a blood transfusion.

If you need to know then you could ask your G.P. for the test but there are many surgeries who will not do it and they suggest you get it done privately.

Imperial,
I would have thought that your blood type would have been picked up already during your life, and been recorded on your medical record, so a separate test should be unneccessary and your GP/ nurse should be able to acess the data for you

Unless there is a specific reason for checking your blood type, I'm pretty sure they don't do it as routine. As someone who has never needed a blood transfusion and as a type 1 diabetic is unable to give blood, I've never had mine tested.

If you have ever had an operation, then it would have been discovered. Also if you were a woman and had been pregnant then it is routinely tested then.

Agreed-They only tested mine prior to surgery so I didn't know my blood type until I was in my 30's.
