Had a stressful week currently isolating due to in contact with colleagues with covid emotions everywhere as chance I lose job I enjoy been diabetic diagnosed 7 weeks ago blood level was 103 on metformin slowxrealease now 2 weeks bloods 12.4 today any ideas why won’t go lower it not eating any sugar and cut down carbs I’m starving all the time feel like giving up
Give us an idea of what you are eating. Carbs can be sneaky and maybe you simply need less than you are still eating. Stress can and does raise levels though. As will illness lack of sleep and some medications. Have you read the nutritional thingy linked to in my signature below? Hunger can be solved by eating more fats and proteins.
I changed from white to whole meal bread although not eat loads of it I had a very sweeet tooth cut all that out I cut down my carb portions and this morning had weetabix however did have later than usual and took my meds 2 hours later as had a lay in x do you think I will be given something to go along with the metformin I don’t overeat and if hungry I just drink water this diabetes is making me miserable

All bread has much the same in the way of carbs. Wholemeal may raise bloods slightly slower but really does just the same damage. Weetabix is hugely carb laden. I’d be up at similar numbers if I ate those things too
Carbs are massively addictive. Once you break the cycle it really really does get easier than it appears before you start.
The timing of metformin isn’t crucial and doesn’t act on the food you eat. It acts by stopping your liver dump as much glucose into your blood as it might otherwise do. It’s a mild medication.
Ah - that is why you are feeling hungry - bread and weetabix are high carb and you are clinging to them rather than switching to more nutritious foods.
Try eating more protein and fat and your hunger should just evaporate away.
Any grains and cereals will be high carb. So bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, pastry etc of any colour or type will be problematic for most of us. Try eggs, bacon, leftovers, continental style cheese and meats etc etc instead of cereals in the morning
Negatory. As others have said, grains are just about the worst thing you can be eating if you're struggling with diabetes. Wheat in particular will often raise blood glucose more than the equivalent amount of table sugar. It's also pretty offensive to the gastrointestinal system of many people, even if they don't know it. But that's another subject entirely.
I avoid all grains with extreme prejudice, but obviously that's just a personal choice.
