Hi nanaclaire
I am having big problems with my BM at moment I have got a few health problems recently I have had to come off Metformin, enaparil and atenolol because of kidney problems and now I have been so hi seem to be taking a lot of insulin breakfast, lunch & evening meal is 30 units of nova rapid & 76 off lantus I am trying to work out CP to insulin but not getting it my GP is referring me back to the team at the hospital .Does this seem alot of insulin to others or is it just me any tips would be appreciated I did do dafne 3yrs ago my ratio is working out at 5-1 if I go any lower it doesn't bring my BM down

Sorry to hear about your problems, Nanaclaire. I hope you get some response from insulin users.

Regards

Doug

Your ratio is correct if post-meal blood sugar is raised by less than 3 mmol/l. Your Lantus dose is correct of fasting blood sugar is within agreed limits (between 5.5 and 7? ask your DSN).
I am not aware of any maximum insulin doses (although I suppose that the low carb camp may have a different opinion) and am not surprised that your requirements have increased since you stopped taking Metformin (see http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/ ... 573-0.html).
Your doses don't seem unreasonable; I recently read somewhere that ratio is usually 1-4u per CP but I'm taking 0.15u per CP so that's not exact.

Without any more details ( what your readings actually were) I can't offer any more specific advice.

Hi thanks for your reply yesterday my BM were great ( breakfast 5.3 lunch 4.4 evening meal 4.3 bedtime 16.3) I had rather a sweet desert so I no why last one was hi this morning and lunch it 10.5 I am hoping that I may have started to bring them down I just need to get to the bottom of being so exhausted nobody seems to be able to put a finger on it I hav been hi before but never felt like this made app to see GP later this week.thanks again.

HI Nanaclaire,
Lantus will probably be the cause of your unexplained tiredenss, and high BGs, I've been there and got the t-shirt:(
Lots of posts on this forum about Lantus problems, do a search, worth taking a look. For many people Lantus doesn't work as it should- erratic, inconsistent and unpredictable BG levels were what I experienced along with many side-effects including exhaustion & pain. Don't waste 4 yrs trying to work out where you're going wrong like I did, when you see your doc ask to try another basal insulin. I'd been type-1 for for many years before I was changed to Lantus, and it was a living nightmare:( Do some google searches for Lantus & tiredness, fatigue, exhaustion. Many people don't get on with synthetic insulins and this has been known about since their introduction in the 1980's, side-effects appear to be more previlent with analogue insulins, introduced in the 90s and the side-effects are often not recognised or ignored by medics. I'll be a headache on this forum about this subject for as long as I am able, if it helps anyone.
Here's a link you may be interested in, don't be alarmed by the "c", it's the side-effects reported that may be of interest to you. http://www.aboutlawsuits.com/lantus-ins ... /#comments
Also it's worth contacting the IDDT for further info, here's a link http://www.iddt.org/here-to-help/contact-us/ Take a look at their website to for honest info about synthetic insulins.
Hope that helps and best of luck with your appointment this week.

Hi Nanaclaire

I hope you get your insulin sorted out soon. Your quality of life is important and it does not sound good at the moment.

Take care

Doug
