Can anyone help? I’ve been lucky enough over the last few years to have my GP husband take my bloods at home prior to hospital clinic appointment but it’s not now possible but my GP practice tell me this has to be done at the hospital which is 15 miles away as a separate appointment. What do other type 1’s do? When first diagnosed 38 years ago HBa1c bloods were taken at hospital by a nurse in the clinic on the day of appointment with results reported at the appointment, this clearly won’t happen these days and will mean 2 appointments on different days. What is normal practice now?

Unfortunately, it depends on the surgery.
Thankfully, my GP surgery is happy to take my bloods and send them to the hospital for analysis.
There is a phlebotomist at my local GP surgery and I can book an appointment with her.

Hi,

Pretty much blood & pee taken by a DSN at my local surgery just up the road then reported back to me.
Then an appointment with an endo that could be at one of two hospitals?
Before I see him, I run the gauntlet of two nurses trying to do the same stuff the DSN did at the surgery a week or so prior..

Thank you, it used to be this way with my surgery but told today it changed in Covid times for safety purposes & hasn’t changed back! I’m guessing it’s GP’s being under so much pressure and off loading back to the hospitals, not so good for us type 1’s though. Perhaps with Libre HBa1C estimates and data it’s not so necessary now maybe.

Thanks, that’s the procedure I’m familiar with including nurse gauntlet, we are money makers for GP surgeries, especially if bloods meet their targets!

I haven’t checked in a long while (maybe 10 or 12 years back?) but my previous & current GP surgeries were reasonably high ranking regarding that side of things?
