Over the last few weeks I have recently started seeing bright shapes. I am 29 and lived with type 1 diabetes for 18 years. the bright shapes have only started since I've been managing my diabetes. At first i thought that this was due to diabetic retinopathy, but have noticed that this seems happens when i go hypo. this symptom has never occurred before when I've been going hypo.
Can anyone advise if hypo symptoms can change, or if this is a sign of diabetic retinopathy?

Thanks

Billy

Hi Billy,

It is probably nothing to worry about but it is worth getting your eyes checked by a good optician if you have not had a check/retinal photography recently. Sometimes tightening up control suddenly can trigger changes but this is not that common. Another thought is that you may be experiencing “silent” migraines brought on by the hypo. These cause visual disturbances, sometimes with nausea, but no headache. If your BGs have run high for a while it is worth testing when you feel hypo to check that you really are as your body’s mechanisms can confuse themselves.

I hope to read that you have had your eyes checked within a day or two. If there is a sudden, severe and permanent change get to A&E as it could be a serious bleed or detached retina!

Regards,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I had my eyes checked in December and there was no real cause for concern. Over the past few years I’ve got complacent with my diabetes and my latest Hba1c was 10.1 since then i have really tightened up my control and now have regular hypos and always monitor my readings. I have experienced this blurry clear vision in about half of my hypos over the past month and never felt sick. i am going to my opticians this afternoon so i will keep you updated.

Thank you very much for your advice its greatly appreciated

Billy

I had my eyes tested in Dec 2012 and a new prescription made up. Since then I have tightened up my BS control and monitoring. I thought my eye sight had changed (no stars or anything like that) and made another eye test appointment last week, in which they confirm my vision had changed.

Its worth getting another eye test done even if its for peace of mind, the retest should be free as its for a diabetic problem, or that's what they put my retest down to.

The optician said that the high BS levels had caused my eyes to change shape, and when I brought the sugar levels down to normal the eyes shape also returned to normal causing the need for a new prescription.
