Bolus advice meters - target range

When I got an Accuchek Aviva Expert meter, my DSN set it up for me. She entered a target range of 6-10. I queried that as 4-7 seems to be the accepted advice but she said if it was set lower I'd have too many hypos. As a result my levels tend to average around 8. I've now tweaked it down to 5.5-9 and so far haven't had a problem.

Anyone else using a meter of that type and what is your target range?

That's good then, you should mention that you've had no issues with the lower targets next time you see your DSN :)

I got the same meter when I did a carb counting course in the summer. The instructor set the meters up with a range of 4 to 6 for most people, but as I do a lot of driving mine was set to 5 to 7. I was told the meter will aim to bring your glucose level to the middle of the range and that's exactly where my hba1c is... I don't generally have an issue with hypos when I follow the meters advice so perhaps it might be worth slowly reducing the upper limit and seeing how it goes?

We've set the target on my daughters to 4-5.5 mmol, but we also have a cgm, so correct whenever we feel we need to anyway.

I have one of these as a spare meter in case my pump handset fails (it's essentially the same meter as my pump). I think it's amazing.

Funnily enough I was tweaking my bolus ratios just yesterday - my lunchtime to early evening timeslots just haven't been quite right - will see how I go today!

:)

My son was given the same metre 3 weeks ago I think its brilliant the only down fall is he was on 1 for 8 but then they put 1 for 9 and he seems high on and off through the days now,I thought he was doing great but they said there was a few hypos they wasn't happy with :/ looks like another phone call to the hospital is due

Hi @krazyk, just a little tip from using that meter, you can enter 2U for 17g as your ratio which will get you half way between the two values. I had to set mine like that to get proper control, I think once you are using 1U for less that 20g, it works better that way as the steps get too large (1U for 8g vs 1U for 9g is a reduction of 12.5%)

Are you setting different ratios for different times of day? I find I need a much smaller bolus in the morning after taking my morning basal. My ratios are 1:16 at breakfast, 1:12 at lunch and 1:9 in the evening. Whatever the promotional literature may say, the effective level of a basal dose is not the same throughout the 24 hours.
