Bone Healing in Type 2 Diabetes

My husband (Age 68) has Type 2 diabetis which is controlled by insulin. He is fit and well in all other ways except he has very painful arthritis in his foot which could be rectified by an operation. The consultant has advised that bone healing will be slow and there is a risk of infection. We don't know what to do as injections in the foot are temporary and the pain is such that my husband is unable to fully enjoy retirement. He was committed to having the operation but the higher risk of infection in particular is worrying him. Any advice would be very welcome.

Hi. I can't see why there is an increased risk of infection if, and only if, your husbands blood sugar is controlled to near normal. Also there is the possible problem of blood circulation in the foot. If there has been long-term capillary damage then blood flow may be reduced but this can be checked by foot pulse and nerve sensitivity tests etc. I had a bunion op a few years ago without any problems but the hospital checked my foot pulse, and BS before the op and every hour during the night (!) afterwards.
