My GP stated on a number of occasions that I am borderline diabetic. Over the last year I keep getting blurred vision, my toe nail went black and came off, if I cut myself it takes weeks to heal, a cut on my head took 6 months to heal. Should I get a second opinion. I do have Virtiligo which my GP states is an Autoimmune disease. Can anyone give me advise please

Hi Pauluk and welcome to the forum. Nobody here can or should attempt to diagnose whether or not you have diabetes. In the UK the standard way to diagnose Type 2 diabetes is for your doctor to do a test of your HbA1c reading. That's basically giving an average of what your blood glucose has been doing over the last three months. If your A1c is 48 or above, you're officially diabetic. Most non-diabetic people have A1c figures in the 38-42 range. Over 42 and under 48 is "pre-diabetes". Do you know what your A1c score was?

The A1c says nothing about symptoms, and it is possible to have a number of diabetic symptoms before you're officially at diabetic levels. I did. What you describe I can identify with.

In my opinion it's a good idea to avoid a formal diagnosis if you can. Becoming "officially" diabetic will affect things like insurance. The good news for me was that a low-carb diet worked really well and quickly in reducing my blood sugars and getting me back to normal levels. Most of my symptoms went as well, although not all. Read around the forum here - try the "success stories" thread - and you'll see it's possible to make changes in diet and lifestyle that should really help.

Best of luck.
