Good afternoon! I hope you’re all well. I recently got my blood test results via the NHS app and I think the below is my blood sugar level result. It also states “Borderline” on the result. This was done around 8:30am on Thursday. I think the last time I ate before the blood test was around 7pm the night before. They sent me a message advising that they had booked me for a telephone appointment with one of their remote GPs this coming Thursday. Does the below result mean that I’m pre-diabetic already? I’m really worried that I am and cannot confirm it until I speak with one of the GPs. Thank you in advance!IMG_7376.jpeg

HbA1C measures an indication of your levels over the last 3 months. It is unaffected by the time of day the blood was taken.
In the UK, pre-diabetic is usually an HbA1C over 42 but in other countries they take readings over 39.
I think it is good that your GP is on the ball and proactively monitoring this.

Thank you for your response. I actually went for a blood test for something else and not my blood sugar. Everything was normal except for my blood sugar. If I didn’t do the test, I wouldn’t know that my blood sugar is quite high. I haven’t spoken to the GP and it will be my first consultation with the GP on thursday. Does this mean that I’m not pre-diabetic yet? Since i saw the results, i’ve cut down my carbs intake and stopped putting sugar in my coffee and drinking fruit juices.

We cannot diagnose, but those figures say no. But you are on the verge, so the restriction of carb intake should be all you need. Be wary of the carbs though, the stuff to watch out for is Bread, potatoes, rice, pastry and pasta whatever colour. Avoid vegetables that grow underground as much as possible. The changes you've made already, are probably enough, but it will be 3 months before they will properly show on n Hba1c test.

Thank you for your response. I’m of southeast asian descent and rice is part of our diet. I used to eat probably a cup of rice every meal. I used to drink a glass or 2 of orange/pineapple juice everyday and put 2 teaspoons of brown sugar in my coffee everyday. The past month has been stressful due to my dog blind, so i was just eating quite bad (donuts almost everyday and loads of crisps every night). I stopped drinking orange and pineapple juices and putting sugar in my coffee. I only have 1 slice of bread in the morning with scrambled eggs. I’m planning to continue to eat rice but only half a cup to give me energy before gym/rugby training. I hope I get my blood sugar down by doing these things.

You should do, but the problem for you is, that you are not utilising all the energy from the rice. What your system cannot use, will get stored away. You may find you need to switch more towards protein and real fats.

Thank you so much! I believe my result as per thr above is 40mmol/mol - as per the link, it says that I’m unlikely to have Diabetes but might still be high risk and CVD management as clinically indicated. I’m just worried as they booked me a telephone call with the GP and my result shows borderline.
