Both siblings type 2

Hi All

I’ve been thinking about my risk factors recently and was curious what others thought.

Both my siblings received a type 2 diagnosis in their 50’s, one was obese and the other has been known for years in the family as the chocoholic. Appeared a healthy weight but did have the pot belly and chocolate was a standard gift whenever they were thought of! Several energy drinks were consumed on the daily.

However, neither of my parents have had diabetes. My father, now 77, still clear. There are some others in the family who are also diabetic.

I had always assumed that since both my siblings developed it, it was a “when” and not “if” for me unless I changed my lifestyle. I’m early 30’s. Now I’m not so sure.

I find it strange that both siblings developed it for a start, but especially so that neither parent had it.

What are my chances? Obviously I can never know 100% but curious about others family history etc. It seems to be almost impossible to develop type 2 without the genetic link - but I could be wrong.

I got type 2 last year age 33 and I have no family with it at all. It came as a real shock. My diet wasn't great but wasn't different to other people my age really. Mine is well controlled now and I rarely see high readings so it's making it easier to come to terms with.

If you have the family history link then it's best just to have a healthy diet, be aware of carbs and keep to a healthy weight. You are clearly aware of it so I don't think it will do you any good to be worried about it. You could spend the rest of your life worrying about it and never get diabetes.

My father was type 2 and his father was too, have a feeling his sister may be also. one of my brothers was also. Myself and brother both diagnosed youngish (30s)

My other brother isnt but has other issues

I think there is definitely, in some, a genetic component but also as it is so linked to carbs and modern ways of eating that perhaps it is not so strange to appear without parents getting it depending on what they eat...

My mother had atrial fibrillation and my remaining brother does. I don't have it. So genetic lottery, we all inherit different parts of it

(Well aware health wise my family managed to not come off so well, fingers crossed the reversal I have instigated helps with all of it and I am well aware that it's so easy to put your head in the sand!)
