- Getting old and everything that goes with it. All the repeats on TV. The drongos who ring me up to sell me things. Religious havens for pedophiles and war-mongers.
"They" say it takes at least 6 weeks to change a habit and even then you will have a "flashback".
I will kick this off but I want others to put in their two bobs worth.
On the subject of changing eating habits I have looked at my experiences elsewhere and the first things I came up with is "THEY" and DIVERSIONS".
Let's look at they?
There is no "they" in other words everything that happens next, after you decide to go with a diet life-change is all; " I or me", there is no "they". "They" did not sell this or that, "they" (the husband wife daughter etc) were eating so I ........ "They" were eating something on TV and it made me hungry. "They" bought ...
So Number One on my list is there is no "THEY". It probably needs more emphasis
There is no "THEY". It is good to get that out of the way. No it is not good to get that out of the way it is good to remind ourselves often "there is no they" this is personal it is me or I but "there is no they".
Diversions
Diversions are obviously things we do to take our pathetic little brains off our basic need for food. ( I must be careful not to use the word "they")
Our minds (brains and memory) are like a put put boat, unless we are dead it is put putting along, so all we can do is steer our little put put boat mind or it will meander into our inner selves looking for something embedded in our mind to do, like our food and hunger file for instance.. This is most apparent when our senses cannot pick up any sound, sight or feel to keep them occupied ( this is the basis of meditation).
Mind diversion can take many forms but at the start of a new diet regime I would suggest that it has to be something new and novel for our minds, so our brain does not start saying "boring, boring I knew that, boring" and starts wandering around in our memory and finds the food and hunger file again.
All that I, me, or myself has to do is draw a line under the old life and start a new one with a new engaging project or interest that comes complete with a new diet regime. (note the the project or interest came first and the diet regime came second) Choosing a diversion can in fact be a diversion in itself. What I me or myself chooses to do can be as varied as our personalities.
The point to remember is that beyond the line you drew in your life, your diversion comes first to your thoughts, and not your new diet regime. This is quite the reverse of the apparent. i.e "I am doing great I am totally focused on my diet and weight loss" We should be totally focused on our diversion and not on food or lack of it.
I think I got through that without a "they".
You could learn a foreign language or a musical instrument or draw or paint or cartoon and if you have a bit of experience (I will not say age) you could write your memoirs.
BTW I hate to say this here but memoirs an be a cross between a cookbook (lots of illustrations and pics) and a scrap book cuttings and pictures with anecdotes and yarns typed or hand written and glued onto backing sheets in a loose leafed folder. Collect more than you need then cull ruthlessly. That will get your mind out of the refrigerator.
Memoirs in a coffee table book format are much more interesting than chronological biographies (pictures tell a thousand words)
So what diversions can you recommend, and does anyone have any comments. I am sure someone thinks focusing their mind energy on their diet and weight loss is the way to success so feel free to have your two bob's worth.
