Hi everyone!

I got diagnosed on the 3rd of November after a scary hospital experience! The few weeks prior I was starting to get really tired out by the slightest physical effort, feeling sooo dehydrated and thirsty, very dry mouth and feeling tired all the time. I sort of brushed it off thinking it was the changing of the season and I was having a slump with the cold weather...

Turns out I was suffering from KDA >_< My gran decided to push me to go to the doctors and that morning we went apparently I was really bad. I barely remember anything that happened after I had got into the car; apparently a doctor at the local surgery had to call an ambulance for me :/

I was in intensive care for 2 days and I sort of overheard what i got but one day when i was finally more in my senses I got told properly that I had Type1 Diabetes and explained how it worked. I spent 3 days in a normal ward learning how to take my insulin and try to overcome injecting myself as most medical things makes me really anxious.

I think I got over being pricked quickly it hurt and it's not pleasant but I sort of got fed up and just wanted it over when the nurses did it. Seeing bare needles makes me uncomfortable still and I need a moment to muster courage to stab myself with a needle :T

I'm out of hospital now and I have a week off work to get the hang of all this and come to terms with this new thing I have to deal with... I've been reading loaads of stuff on the diabetes uk website it's interesting but it doesn't really make things easier. I've been struggling with my blood sugar numbers but the nurses say I shouldn't worry so much for now, though they've said I'm allowed to up my insulin dose up a unit or two if my blood sugars are too high.

Today is the first day I managed to keep my blood sugar below 10 I'm really chuffed about that though!

It's hopefully going to get easier with routine and habit over time, but I'm still sort of apprehensive about things. It's a new adventure and I'm feeling ups and downs with each passing day already.

So thats my story so far, more or less! I'm looking forwards to poking around this forum for stories and things in the future, and maybe meeting new friends?

Hi, I'm a new T2. I'm having a go at LCHF and trying to exercise. I feel a lot better for it. Keep going you sound like you're doing well.

Welcome @Redkitebait

If you'd like a book about Type 1, Think Like A Pancreas is excellent. It has lots of info. I still refer to it even though I've had Type 1 years for more than 20 years.

it sounds like you're doing really well If you haven't already been taught it, you could push for education about carb counting. That's crucial for good control.

Take it slowly, test lots and ask any questions you want here

I have to agree with Azure whole heartedly. I too have been Type 1 for a long time (26yrs) and have learnt loads from the book quoted, its an easy read and i treat it as a diabetic bible.

I personally think your doing well getting your BG down to 10, thats one hell of an achievement i was no where near that at your stage of diagnosis.

Try not to worry about it too much your diabetic team will be working for you so you can afford to ease up a little, this little ease off may help you in the long run. It will seem like a lot to learn in the beginning but as time goes by you will be taking the stabilisers off your bike and cycling with confidence.

Regards

Martin

Hello and welcome, it can be a big shock at first, but in time things will get a little easier. Ask any questions or just have a good look around the forum, take care.
Best wishes RRB

Red Kites eat all sorts of things, worms, insects, carcasses anything they can get away with - which one are you?!

You are doing great, routine will help and it does get a bit easier, I agree with the book recommendation but I wouldn't read it just yet, give your self time to get use to things.

Keep testing and logging results, dosages and food - it will help your diabetes team to help you.

Hi and welcome. It will take time to absorb it all and to get your insulin dosage right. I assume you are on daily (Basal) and meal-time fast (Bolus) insulins? As you gain experience you may need to tweak your Basal units a little and if you haven't yet been told to adjust your Bolus to the meal-time carbs then do ask the nurse to explain as these things all help to keep the blood sugar at the best level.

Hello and welcome, you're dealing with it really well. This forum is excellent, you're in the right place.

Welcome. I was diagnosed coming up for 2 years ago in December. I remember feeling exactly like you describe. It will soon become second nature. I agree with @azure and whole heartedly recommend you order "Think Like A Pancreas" - it really helped me understand diabetes and what I needed to do to best control it. It helped me adjust so much more quickly than I would have done by just relying on the diabetes care team at the clinic/hospital. Good luck with everything. The first few weeks can be a challenge but it will get easier.

Yeah I take novorapid insulin before each meal then i take lantus before bed.

I've been writing all my numbers down and i noticed i was getting consistent numbers (too high before dinner and bed) so after a chat with my diabetic nurse we agreed to up my dose on those two meals and after that for the first time i got under 10mmol/L every time i checked for 2 days

i haven't been taught yet how to correct insulin yet, I'm worried about taking more shots than the usual injection with each meal. I don't want to make a mistake and hypo, especially without talking to someone like a diabetic specialist or someone first..

I ordered the carbs and cals book and it came today it's super interesting to read and I cant wait to make use of it!

Thank you all for the kind welcome messages I think I'll definitely come here if I have questions ^^

I'll have a look into getting this book for a christmas present maybe I bought the Carbs and Cals book because I was reccommended to do so by the people looking after me.
