Bread trouble

Hi all i'm new to the diabetes problem, was diagnosed 4years ago and things were OK no problems. I am now noticing things have changed. I bought a bgm on Tuesday and was surprised at how bread is affecting my sugar levels. I was wondering what sort of breads you all eat and whether any are particularly better than others?

Thanks in advance
Andrea :-(

Personally I cannot tolerate Bread at all.

I do sometimes eat a 25g slice of German Rye bread, but never on it's own, but even that is borderline, and sometimes raises my BG beyond what I think is acceptable.

As a T2 I have accepted that bread can no longer be a part of my diet.

Hi and welcome to the forum, I think you will find most of us here avoid bread like the plague as it is well known for shooting up the numbers, Lidl do a high protein roll which a lot of people can manage to eat without too much trouble, but the only way to tell if you can manage it is to test before eating then 2 hrs after the first bite, if your numbers spike the I'm afraid you will have to chose between high numbers or bread, for me its a no brainer so no bread.

Thank you satindoll and British pub, my job is quite active as I'm a cleaner so do need my carbs have you any suggestions? White bread certainly give me a spike!!!

Why do you think you need carbs because you are active? Nobody needs carbs. In the absence of carbs, our bodies burn fat for energy and that is much better for us, for our BS levels, cholesterol, and general health.

I buy the Lidl high protein rolls, slice them in half and freeze them. I have a half of one toasted with masses of butter with my egg mayo or bacon and egg lunches. A whole roll has about 9g of carbs, but a whole one is hard to eat as they are so dense and filling. Half of one is plenty. A slice of ordinary bread is upwards of 17g carbs, which is half my daily allowance.

When I did eat bread I tried Burgen linseed brown bread, but to be honest I found it easier and kinder on my body to just not bother.

If I have bread I have the Hovis Multi Seeded Bread (the one in the orange packaging) which is 13g carbs per slice however I have tested myself and know that it does not spike me

Try the Burgen Soya and Linseed bread a lot here can manage that or as said the Lidl protein rolls they have been a salvation for those who could not eat any other bread. I know bread is not essential but sometimes nothing else will do For me a poached egg has to be on Marmite toast or boiled eggs with toasted Marmite soldiers I do have the Burgen bread though

Lidl high protein rolls all the way.Have very little effect on my BG levels. And of course that being the low carb part of LCHF I can have nice full fat cheese, pate, bacon, egg mayo etc with no problems.
Check them out and have a look at the Low Fat High Carb diet approach which so many have had success with here.Cut out the carbs and therefore glucose as your energy source and proceed directly to eating plenty of good fats which your body will instead burn up for energy. My BG levels are transformed as are cholesterol levels in a short period of time.
Have a read around here for more info
Still missing the occasional Scotch pie or a Bride tho.;-)

Thank you all so much!! Lots of help will try the lidl rolls, I bought a multi grain bread yesterday and spiked me right up, will also have a good look at the low carb suggestions on here. Thank you all again :) Redsnapper I like scotch pies too will have to avoid them til i'm in Scotland again with my hubby!

I don't really follow LCHF any more (it was too effective at losing weight!) and eat 2 slices of home made bread every day: it doesn't spike me significantly at all (blood after 1 hour is less than 1 mmol/l above start and back to normal after 2). However, I can't eat potatoes at all without hitting double figures!
I guess we're all different and the best advice is to find out what affects you individually
